Description
I used the Erik Karlsson trade as reference to what a Defencemen of that Caliber is worth

Which broke down as 1 NHL Ready Top 9 Forward, 1 Bottom Pair defencemen, 2 Prospects 1 1st, 1 2nd & 2 Conditional Picks. with very similar conditions i added here

I did not add as many draft picks compared to that trade as i feel Robertson & Liljegren are higher rated prospects in comparison to Norris & Balcers

To Refresh this was the Trade 2 years ago.

Dylan DeMelo
Josh Norris

Yikes, that Brent Burns contract is going to look terrible in like 2-3 years, let alone 6.

I don't see Toronto making this deal any day soon. They're internally extremely high on Kapanen and Burns is just too old for this group. If Burns was in his late 20's I think the idea would make sense for them. But as is it doesn't make a lot of sense right now

100%. Between him, Karlsson and Vlasic, they’re going to have a not so fun time in a few years a (or now...)

Except it's 34 yr old Brent Burns with a long long expensive contract, not 28 year old Erik Karlsson, who if you didn't pay you'd have that lovely top 3 pick.

Think about 6 Years, Burns at 6.6m when the cap is consistently going up. 6 Years ago the NHL Cap was 64.3m, Thats a 17.2m increase. In 6 Years thats Equal to the NHL having a 98.7m Cap hit if it increased the same amount. I would take a 40 year old Burns at that cap percentage any day of the week

We'll have to agree to disagree, because I don't think Burns will be worth $2 million at age 40.

It’s mind bottling that a GM can be so good (Karlsson trade before that pick became a top 10 choice, the Lebanc contract for this year, etc), but so friggin’ bad at the same time.

Think you have proved why the Leafs don't make the deal....it's a massive overpayment. Look how successful the Sharks have been the 11.5m Karlsson and now even the 8m Burns. Not good at all.
You really can't used % as a yardstick. When younger players want to get good contracts it's no good for a team to have declining players plugging up the cap. And as we have seen last summer, good RFA are getting close or even UFA money.
Sharks and their over 30 year and more threesome of Karlsson, Burns, Vlasic...26.5m. awful value on the ice right now.

Has there even been a team that has made the playoffs paying a D 11 million? I don't think so

Every post on here is spot on.
How does the phrase go...
Chasing butterflies?
Or trying to catch lightning in a bottle?
Heck, you can trade only half the assets above to a rebuilding team at TDL for a solid, mid pairing d man in his prime, who will give you 4-6 years good years of service. The league is gravitating to getting younger and faster, not older and slower. There is a premium now on drafting...trying to weed through the hype to determine which prospects will be able to combine talent, speed, and compete level to make it in the league.
Every year there are too many older players not having a dance partner at the end of the summer, only to hang em up, play in Europe, or wait it out like Justin Williams just did for the Canes.
Or go to a team that has too many ready d men...
The Jackets have excelled at this the past few years (scouting and drafting/developing). In fact there is a log jam now at D. They won’t be willing to give up a Jones or Werenski, but a Kukan, Harrington, Carlsson, or Murray, etc will probably be available sooner rather than later.

Nashville made it twice with P.K. Subban making $11M in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

If you're talking about cap hit, this is the first season there has ever been a defenseman with an $11 million cap hit, so a team has never missed the playoffs with a D having an $11 million cap hit either.

Cap hit is the only thing relevant, not looking good on playoffs for 11 million on a single Defense man

I didn't want to mention the two forwards. Leafs haters say you can't win with four forwards making 40.6m...yea that might be true. But would rather be in the Leafs position than have 41.5m in five guys (Karlsson, Burns, Classic, Couture and Kane) who are probably on the downside soon.

Dell, with retention, is worth a 2nd. Ceci is moved for cap space.

So you're offering Burns, with some retention, for Kapanen, Liljegren, Robertson, and a 3rd. Still sounds slightly high, based on age and a slightly down year, but acting like all of the above are valuable pieces for Burns makes it sound worse than it is.

Take out Liljegren and I think a few Toronto fans might come around?
