Backstrom is my top Cap, but $9.2 hurts from day one when considering he will be 33. The back half of this contract will be really painful.

Haha I would love to be the owner that fired you over that idiotic statement.

“ hey so we didn’t sign Bäckström “
“Why not”
“Oh he wanted 9.2m but I offered him 8m”
“You let a franchise center leave over 1.2m?”
“Yeah”
“How much would it cost to get a top 15 center to replace him”
“Tavares got 11m, Seguin 9.85 these other guys aren’t top 15 quality but kopitar 10m Toews 10m Duchene just gotta 8m”
“Yeah you’re a moron”

And they were all 4 to 7 years younger when their contracts kicked in. Look at Backstrom's last 4 to 7 years and those are the years you are missing in your comparison.

Tavares signed an 8 year deal for 11 million 27-28? That takes him to he’s 35-36? Bäckström signed 5years at 32 he’ll be 37. Basically the same deal but the capitals paid far less money and get a similar player talent wise.

Same with Pittsburgh? That’s what happens when you’re good for a decades. Capitals are aging more like the red wings where we still have some great young talent to come up. Protas Michael Alexeyev ferv Samsonov ..... Vrána Wilson Kuzy Orlov are all under 30. This team should be competitive for a while.

Bye-bye Braden! Nice to see we chased you out of your team. They're turning to Samsonov next year with this cap hit.

He needed to be signed but not for that much. I would have gave him 8m/per year.

You don't think he deserves more than Couture? I think $8.5M for 5 years would've been ideal. The Cup window is wide open and he's a true #1 C. Those don't exactly grow on trees.

So I guess Holtby will be playing his final season in Washington. I don't see why the Caps could re-sign him anyway. A Bob-like AAV would be a mistake, in my opinion. The could use his cap space on a UFA LHD. Maybe Sami Vatanen.

8m would have been the ideal, but for 500k more I would still had signed him. I know he's one of the most underrated center and most the core (Backstrom, Oshie, Wilson, Carlson) are sign for at least 4 more years. Next to be sign is Ovy since Holtby will won't be back next year.

Habs fan u can't talk weber and price are signed until 40

Weber contract was signed when he was with Montreal. in fact Nashville didn't even come up with the contract. It was an offer sheet from Philly that Nashville felt obligated to match.

No. You are missing Backstrom's last 5 years production in that comparison.

You are assuming his stats fall off a cliff? He’s on pace for 70 points this year

You are using contracts that include players primes when discussing this one that starts at 33 years old. Don't go all Eli on me.

I’m simply pointing out that end of the day both players are signed till the same age. Major difference is Bäckström made way less

Tavares was def. overpaid by at least $1.5M AAV. Worst contracts by far in the NHL are Price and Bob. I love this contract for the Caps.

I honestly dgaf. At the end of the day Bäckström was paid 6.7m for so long that his contract was easily a top 5 the last 5 years. Let him make some money. He’s a top 15 center guys like Ryan jo make 8m like come on now

Absolutely. And they'll be saving a boatload of cap space when they let Holtby walk as a UFA.

Tanev's contract might very well backfire in a couple years, but he's been really impressive thus far. He's a huge part of the Pens success. Most of us, me included, were highly critical of Jim Rutherford on this one.

It's gonna be really interesting to see how much Holtby signs for next season. Especially considering how Price and Bob have disappointed with their ridiculous contracts. I think the GM's will learn from those mistakes, unless of course WASH wins the Cup again with Holtby leading the way!

Caps present: Cup favorites. Most people thought PIT was slowing down. But I hear you. They probably have another 2-3 seasons where the Cup window is wide open.

The Tavares deal buys his age 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, and 34 seasons.

Backstrom's contract buys his age 33, 34, 35, 36, 37 seasons.

Backstrom's contract buys 3 full seasons of him at an older age then Tavares deal does, and the Tavares deal buys a lot more of his most productive years, so the comparison isn't really fair, Tavares contract is a far better value.

This contract isn't likely to be a good value, but you can defend the signing by acknowledging that by keeping Backstrom you keep the most successful core in this organizations history together, you give them the best chance at winning a 2nd title, as well as adding division titles, playoff rounds, and personal career milestones. Having Ovi and Backstrom finish their careers as Capitals, and being part of some very big and important moments can be as valuable to a franchise's history and business, as total on ice value. I don't mind that a GM was willing to compromise a little and likely acknowledge that Backstrom was underpaid for a lot of years while not completely handcuffing the team 8 years.

However I don't think you can make a good argument by comparing this contract against contracts signed by younger players. Backstrom is better than Duchene, but that contract is bad, so the comparison doesn't make Backstrom's contract look good. Backstrom isn't as productive today as Tavares so that comparison really doesn't help.

Signing Backstrom is good, and likely worth it, he is likely not going to live up to the cost for the duration of the contract. Both things can be true at once.
