Description
This post is dedicated to Jamie.

Sheldon Keefe has set Maple Leaf history tonight with the Leafs win over the Islanders by coaching the team to 15 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie in his first 20 games. This is an accomplishment that no coach has achieved in the 101 year history of the team: win 15 of his first 20 games.
Hall of Famer and the great Hap Day set the previous record for hot starts behind the Leafs bench by going with 14 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie in his first 20 games as coach during the 1940-1941 season.

I’m actually happy for the leaf fans but I have no clue how you guys are so optimistic. Before the capitals won the cup i was so negative and could appreciate any regular season accomplishments

It's because the Capitals were always favourites and kept losing, Leafs were always underdogs. I'm fed up with postseason failure but it's different when you're projected to win as opposed to lose

Different but has some similarities. Capitals biggest hurdle was the penguins/ rangers. Leafs have the bruins. IMO leafs are expected to win due to the talent on the roster. This guy makes these post about them winning like it’s unexpected. I assume they would get 105 point and be a top 2 in their division. They are deep at center and have solid wingers.

Hutchinson's interview was priceless! What a beauty! I hope he goes on a run and silences all the calls for the need for a new backup. What a great guy.b

Hutchinson being left handed with a shutout and his postive personality tonight actually reminds me of the great Tony "0" Esposito of the Chicago Black Hawks. He only needs 14 more shut-outs this season to tie Tony Esposito's NHL shut-out record of 15 during the 1969-1970 season.

Hutch is right handed. I was impressed with the overall defensive play and happy Hutch had the game he did.

I am legit getting excited. They can play games like this when then need too. How scary is that? Oh you want a tight checking game with little chances? Yeah we can do that. Oh you want to open it up a little? Good luck.

They need to tighten up more still but what I've seen recently has so much potential.

See this is what I was talking about when I was being critical of their defensive play. On some level this win is so much more satisfying not because I don't enjoy fire wagon hockey (I do, it's exciting as hell), it's because this is the kind of game style we see in the playoffs.

Fire wagon hockey means that last goal wins which becomes a 50-50 proposition. The way the Leafs played tonight increases odds in their favor by alot more imo.

I don't want to take too much wind out if Keefe's sails but his lineup is powerful. It's not like Trotz somehow making this Islanders squad a contender. Keefe has so much skill to work with. And at the same time, he deserves credit for getting the most out of this lineup.

A lot of it comes from a swagger we get from an us vs everybody mentality. Doesn’t seem to matter what teams fan base it is, they hate the Leafs for whatever reason. Especially the other Canadian team fans because they know when the Leafs come to town, our fans are taking over their building and making it our own. The hate gives us confidence.
P.S I was super stoked to see Ovie get his cup. Congrats to your boys for getting one after years of falling short

I have a slight different opinion in that you can agrue that Mike Babcock actually had the same and actually better roster considering all the current Leafs injured (ie Moore, Johnsson, Mikheyev and Muzzin) and he did not get anywhere near the winning results as Sheldon Keefe. Sheldon Keefe is the best coach in hockey and he knows how to motivate players by giving them roles, confidence and the trust to succeed.

You may not have noticed tonight but he had Marchment, Gauthier and Timashov playing in the last minute of tonights game to reward and booth their confidence. He has bumped Justin Holl into a shut down defenceman and elevated him up to the 3rd and 4th defence pairing. He starts Adam Brooks at centre ice in his home town of Winnipeg. He starts Hutchinson tonight against powerful Islander team. He jumps starts Nylander into domination mode by putting him with Tavares. He puts Marner with Matthews on a line as both players have been dying to play with each other for the last 3 years. He shows alot of confiedence in Engvall as a rookie by playing him up from 4th line and allows him to kills penalities. He shelters Ceci by moving him to 5th and 6th pairing defenseman. He gets Barrie going by pairing him with Reilly and giving him major power play time. He rewards Marchment for his hard work by promoting him and playiing him in his first 2 games on the Leafs roster. He moves Kerfoot to play leftwing to play with Tavares and Nylander and form a powerful line. He starts Spezza in a hockey in Canada day game where his 4 kids are watching the game. He shows alot of trust in Marincin when Muzzin goes out of the line-up.

Agree that Trotz is also a great coach but for my money Sheldon Keefe is the best in the NHL and he continues to prove it with each win in the column for the Leafs.

I think so too, this offense isn't going to slow down much but I think they can be far more defensively sound which is scary.
