I def. don't see Philly missing at this point. I hate them, but they could actually win the Metro. Columbus has lost 8 straight. Could go down to the final night of the season with multiple spots up for grabs!

Wow, i noticed the Jackets were struggling but i didn't notice they lost 8 straight. The Flyers are only 3 points in ... they could win the Metro or they could miss the playoffs.

another reason this should be 1-8 instead of 1-3 from each division and then final 2 wildcard spots...
in the east as current vs what 1-8 would look like...
1. Bruins 1. Bruins
2. Caps 2. Lightning
3. Lightning 3. Caps
4. Penguins 4. Penguins
5. Flyers 5. Flyers
6. Maple Leafs 6. Islanders
7. Islanders 7. Hurricanes

I think we can safely assume that the 3 from the atlantic will be Bos, TBL, Tor in that order.

Let's say Florida finished 10-4-1, which could totally happen. Then say Toronto finished 7-6-1. With that, Florida would finish ahead of Toronto. But i agree it's probably the three you mentioned.

Death, taxes, and BOS/TB/TOR getting the Atlantic's three divisional playoff spots.

I know ... we haven't been very good since the 17-game point streak. We need to start winning games. At least we're getting the extra points from the OT/SO losses, but still, unless we start winning we're not making the playoffs.

What if the NHL starts the regular season in early May, finishes by the end of the month, starts playoffs in early Junes and ends the playoffs in late July? It could work ...

Just saying it is possible that the entire season is finished with regular season AND playoffs. Unlikely? Yes. Impossible? No.

I'm thinking the regular season is over, one way or another. Playoffs could feature 3-game series for the first two rounds, a 5-game series in Conf. Finals, and 7-game Cup Final. The entire playoffs would take around 5-6 weeks, instead of 8-9 weeks.

Did you see the players' idea? Open camp in early July, finished regular season at the end of July (with teams having busier schedules), playoffs from start of August until late September, draft/FA/etc in October, 2020-21 begins in November with a full 82-game season. Interested idea that could work ... the big questions are whether the players have enough rest between seasons and how the NHL could do a full 82-game season next year with full playoffs if it starts in November.

Basically, their offseason is now, right? So your scenario could work, but it'd be an absolute grind for the top teams. I like it, but I think it might make sense to possibly reduce next season to a 65-70 game regular season.

On another note, the teams that were sellers at the deadline must feel pretty fortunate right now. The picks/prospects will essentially be free if the season doesn't resume in one way or another.

Just added numbers because those are two very different points. I'll reply to them both:

1. It sounds like the NHL is doing whatever it can to make sure that next season is played fully. However, i do think they could fit in an 82-game season even if we're going by the players' idea of starting the season in November. Let's say it starts in mid-November. Then the regular season would normally be set to end around mid-to-late May. But let's say they cancel the all-star game (which would be fine in my opinion. The all-star game is kind of a joke in my opinion ... it doesn't seem very organized anymore), then that brings it back to let's say May 15th or so. Then if they remove bye weeks and make teams play with schedules that are a bit busier, they could get the regular season to end by the end of April and then you're pretty much on the same schedule as 2013 when it comes to the playoffs. Maybe the draft and free agency happen a little bit late. And then for 2021-22, the coronavirus should have nothing to do with whether the NHL goes to the Olympics or not. That's looking too far ahead, though.

2. I'm not quite sure what you mean ... the trade deadline is done, so teams should forget about what they could have done differently (that would have been better OR worse) ... i'm not quite sure what the point is that you're trying to make.

On the second point, if the season were to be completely canceled, teams that spent high draft picks/prospects on pending UFA's will have wasted those picks/prospects. Hopefully, that doesn't happen, but, for example, the Isles gave up a 2nd rounder for Andy Greene. If the season is cancelled they will have wasted that pick. At least w/ Pageau they extended him long term. Same could be true for a team like Carolina with Sami Vatanen or PIT with Marleau.

Well, it doesn't matter if they gave up anything for those players or not, because that's past history. I agree it would be unfortunate for those teams if they cancel the season, but the same can be said for teams like Washington with Holtby or St. Lous with Pietrangelo.
