Another attempt at Lafreniere

Description
This team should plummet in the standings as their lower forward lines and lower D-pairings will be completely overwhelmed. They'll get a top 5 pick for sure, and even if they don't get #1 overall they can offer quite a package of multiple 1sts to move up a few spots. Meanwhile, KK, Poehling, Fleury and Suzuki are sent to the AHL to refine their games and waltz to a Calder Cup (and to help ensure the team loses a lot through the winter). Domi and Mete need to be resigned but won,t break the bank, and many bad contracts come off the books at season's end. The 2020 forward lines will include Danault, Drouin, Gallagher, Domi, Lehkonen, Lafreniere, Poehling, Suzuki, Armia, Kotkaniemi, and maybe Caufield as well. Or, perhaps they just end up with Byfield.

The only way to get Lafrenière is by winning the lottery, and the teams that will make those moves won't be lottery picks but teams making the playoffs, bubble teams won't make that gamble.

You won't be able to trade for a pick to get Lafrenière, remember in 2015, Bruins wanted to move their 3 1sts to Buffalo for 2nd overall, the gap between those picks is too big to make a move.

You are probably right, but I am counting on, in this scenario, the Habs spiral down the standings and having a top-5 or even top 3 pick and another in the top 10 with the Rangers, so a little more possible even if they don't win first overall. But maybe they just get Byfield.

I can't imagine those packages getting any one of those teams' first-round picks. Petry with retention might get Winnipeg's, but then the Jets will make the playoffs; they're probably a lock now as it is.

Detroit, Los Angeles, New Jersey, San Jose/Ottawa, Ottawa, and Chicago are almost certain to finish below you, and then there's Anaheim, Buffalo and Columbus, so it's hard to believe you'll fall much below 10.

Except that here I have traded many useful players for scrubs and cap dumps, and buried promising prospects that doN't need waivers in the minors. With perhaps the exception of Detroit, all of these teams would become instantly better than the configuration of the Habs proposed here. Of course these are completely unlikely deals but its what it would take to get Lafreniere, a serious and deliberate implosion of the roster for the entire 2nd half of the season.
