Great deal. Coyle has been the perfect fit for the Bruins, last playoffs and now. And he's only 27 so maybe his contract will end just in time if he starts regressing

Great contract for the Bruins. He’s very versatile and brings a lot to the team. Maybe a year or two too long, but the cap hit certainly makes up for it.

He's playing good now but paying Coyle 5.25 until he's 34 is rough.

My initial reaction was that this was too much money for a 3C, but honestly this is the going rate these days (albeit the top end of that rate). Maybe a little high for him but not by much (750k overpay /year at the absolute most). My only issue with the deal is the term. If you are going to pay a 3C that kind of money at his age, lower the term. 4 years would have been much better (Think something similar to the Bozak deal for STL).

I think I am going to say no to this mostly because of those two extra years, but other than that it isn't a crazy deal.

There is no way this a great contract...

There is a chance that this contract could be ok, but it won't ever be a steal.

High risk, medium reward is what I see here

Good moves by Sweeney for CC (& Wagner). It's called getting in front of the parade and leading the pack instead of being a dumb clown on the float in the middle or end of the pack.

Coyle has begun to fit in nicely as he gets more games in the B's system (think "Mr. Versatile"). On pace for 45 points this year, played the point on the PP last night and can move into "1stC or 2ndC hole" and be effective (eg: Bergy goes down and he's next man up). In two years, Krejci is unlikely too be re-signed (at least at >US$7M, just my opinion, I like DK, maybe he takes a hometown discount?). That said, Coyle would then be positioned as #2C regular maybe and he'll be 3.5 years a Bruin by then...
Bruins now have 15 guys signed for next year too. Key signings left = UFA Krug, RFA Debrusk, RFA Grizz, UFA Halak...(Chara?)
Sweeney's favourite song = "The Beat Goes On Baby...."

Great contract for someone who will be the B's next 2C when krech gets traded/let go, and will see an increase in point production with the promotion. Very versatile, can play up and down the lineup. Sweeney proving why he's GM of the year. At least now the B's have some stability down the middle after the bergy/krech era.

I think Coyle in many ways is comparable to Konecny on PHI, who also got a similar contract. Konecny was boosted by top 6 minutes to get higher production, and Coyle has been restricted to the middle six, thus the comparable if given identical minutes and usage is alright. Konecny though took his contract and expanded on it because he is still young - I can't see Coyle doing the same.

Thus I am agreement that this should have more mirrored the Bozak deal, and does not look good at this term.
Still, it's probably better than going at the minimum availability centers and RW in free agency and probably will be looked at on as a "win"

well the difference here is that backes was signed when he was 31. Coyle is only 27 (will be 28 when contract starts) so the production technically shouldn't fall off as early as it did in backes' case (when he became 33). Let's say Coyle is on the same trajectory to fall off, so that's 5yrs of good production and only 1 yr of dead money, as opposed to 3 yrs of dead money in backes' case.

I guess that's a good, but I don't think Coyle deserves that money in the first place. It's already 500,000-1,000,000 overpaid before you even factor in regression

Exactly what I was thinking. I think BOS will be very fortunate if Coyle plays at his current level for 4 years.

If Krug is gone they'll need to replace him with either a trade or another UFA Defenseman. Nobody in house is capable of running the PP like Krug, or even close to Krug.

Agreed, maybe give assets and move Backes to resign Krug?

I know they'd absolutely hate to pay big just to save cap space, but it'll be worth it to keep the Cup window wide open.

They’re definitely lucky to have him going forward, Coyle is an excellent player. Will he be excellent for another 6 years? I’m not so sure
