Cap space for some teams is so important. Pens in effect got no return for 4m X 2 Gudbranson...So be it. Ducks have space and need a RHD, so it was good deal for both teams.
Look what it cost the Leafs to rid themselves of 6.25m X 1 cap of Marleau...a first rounder.

everyone said it would cost an arm and a leg to move him and Jack Johnson.

And I bet that none of those people will say a word.

... they are probably used to be wrong anyway.

This is impressive, but it would be more impressive if he hadn't traded for him in the first place.

it was actually a good initial trade.

Better than adding a sweetener

adding a sweetener to take a decent player would be idiotic.

Gudbranson is arguably the worst dman in the league and has been for years now (right up along with JJ and Ceci).
The initial trade was awful

What's the logic behind this trade for the Ducks? Why now? Why at all?

Because Josh Manson is likely to be out until 2020.

In most of my Pittsburgh posts I had Anaheim giving the Pens a fifth-rounder for him, so Martinsen plus a seventh isn't far off. This isn't a question of whether it's a good deal or a bad deal for the Ducks -- it was a necessary deal. Otherwise, the right side of Anaheim's defense would be Korbinian Holzer, the rookie Haakanpaa and three guys playing on their off side.

with the penguins that isn't even close to being true. Was at least better than JJ and was arguably an average third pairing guy. Problem was his contract was terrible for a third pairing guy. Thing is at least there was more depth on the right side so it meant one stayed(JJ) while the other one was sent packing.

He's taken three shots in his first period with the Ducks (playing on the #1 pair with Lindholm), levelled Gabriel Landeskog with a great check and goaded the Avs captain into taking a retaliatory penalty carrying over into the second, and been on the ice for both Anaheim goals. He's already earned his keep in my eyes.

On top of it, he was brought it to clean up the ice. Which was the real reason he landed in Pittsburgh and he did that.
I liked his game. I would have rather seen JJ moved. But it is what it is. I have nothing against him. His contract was a little high, but I could live with that for 2 years.
GMJR didn't want to see him go. I get why. He's not the worst D man in the league by far. There is far worse out there.
The same is true with JJ too but people would never want to admit it so it's not worth arguing.
People put JJ last year as the example. They don't take into account he played his offside for like 80% of the year.
He's done ok this year on his side. Much better than Ceci that's for damn sure.

The fact Gudbranson gets traded twice within a year is proof any contract in the NHL is tradeable

They all said Lucic couldn't be traded, too.

Both teams get what they needed. Anaheim has a RHD (albeit a pretty bad one), but had the cap space to overpay a bottom pairing defender that will drop the mitts. Penguins get $4M in cap space off the books and get a big body for their AHL team.

Don't bury us just yet. But if we don't win 5 of the 7 games on the upcoming home stand, it'll be time to put on the black suit and dark tie.

so, your showing that a third pairing defenseman wasn't a super star offensively and was mediocre defensively? who woulda thought. Being below average leaguewide doesn't make somebody anywhere close to the worst one overall.

You understand that the % are above or below replacement level and that a + in the D zone means you are worse than replacement level right?
He generates 17% less offence than a replacement level player and allows the other team to generate 8% more offence than a replacement level player.
THAT IS REALLY, REALLY BAD!
Like worst Dman in the league kind of bad.

Here is Sbisa for example:

And Hjalmarsson

yes, and you just proved my point by picking somebody with a just as bad percentage. How can somebody be the worst when even you picked somebody who using the +/- metric are similarly bad? and not even the most notable bad defenseman around the league
