Actually with Leafs being team that would be cap team for next 5-6 years at minimum, it makes sense to prolong your young guys' ELC as much as you can and this is doing this.

they'r saving a year on his elc which they need with all the cap issuses... playing more minutes, 3rd line with the leafs or top line with marlies.... as well as he gets to develop more, getting more out of him throughout his career.... yep leafs made the right call

When you're trying to win a cup you don't take that into account. The leafs have Muzzin and Barrie expiring after this year and they're going to lose at least 1 of them, they need to have their best players playing. Why worsen your chance at a cup over 30k in cap space? Unless there is a trade in the works than there will be no winning. No team is winning anything with Marincin as a regular

If you think of it that way, they can just call him up just before the playoffs, not burning a year of his ELC.

Wondering if this is more an expansion draft move????

The money certainly matters long term, but I cannot help but think this is an asset management thing.

Given how well the organization has developed its talent over the last few years, we can question it but can we doubt the decision making?

I’m just saying, if you do see Sandin as better than Marincin, I don’t think that’s going to be the difference of the Leafs making the playoffs. So if they call him up just before the playoffs then you have your best possible team when it matters.

He’s expansion eligible, nothing the Leafs can do to change that.

Leafs are not contenders first and foremost. They are close but not there yet. TBH they are likely on cusp. Marincin is not gonna be a regular, Gravel is and he was good in preseason. Leafs are thinking about both current status and future which is refreshing to see in the league where you either tank or throw everything at winning the thing.

If they're not contenders why haven't Jake Muzzin and Tyson Barrie been extended or traded yet? It seems pointless to lose these guys for nothing if the team isn't a contender yet?

You dont have to be contender to have great team. This is basically you saying that team can either be contender or tank, nothing between. They will get into discussions about their respective extension, but they want to get feel for them and how they will be playing as longterm Leafs. its game 6. Chill.

Bad enough Mikheyev will be gone next year cause 2M+ for him will be unaffordable either second Pair will need to be Marincin - Holl......

They can re-sign Mikheyev easily.

Don’t know why CapFriendly lists him as exempt, but Sandin needs to play 3 pro seasons to become eligible. Since he played with the Marlies last year, that’s season #1. He’ll either play in the NHL or AHL this year, which is season #2. And next year is season #3. So since he played in the AHL last year, he’s eligible no matter what.

IDK, because Cale Fleury, who is in almost the exact situation, is listed as eligible already.

I begrudgingly accept this logic. The whole, let him play more minutes against inferior competition is a weak argument but this makes sense.

He won't be though. Holl has taken his spot and once Dermott comes back Marincin is out of the lineup.
