I mean, the part where the Caps give up the better, tougher goal scoring RW to get cap space in four years? That makes sense.
Throwing in Djoos definitely gets it done. After he was healed from his broken leg last year, Djoos got seven even strength points in his last 18 games, which would put him on pace for 33. Forget Irwin. Smith only got 38 points last year, and only 30 were at evens.
I may be a Caps fan, but from what I remember of Poile, he's a pretty big fan of defensemen who can skate with the puck and make good passes, even if they don't hit a lot. Djoos reminds me a bit of Calle Johansen, and with offense like he showed at the end of last year, he could grow into a similar top pair role to what Johansen played on Poile's Caps. If he and Forsberg can speak Swedish together on the power play, that could help both do better.
Does MacLellan really do this to himself, just for cap space to keep Holtby? I mean... Holtby's pretty good, so maybe? But you also need defensemen, or even good goalies look bad. If Holtby walks, Edmonton is likely to make a play for him. How good might Koskinen look behind the Caps' defense, until Vanecek or Samsonov steps up?
