Description
Let me just simply start by saying I get people dislike Anisimov. Despite the hate he gets he is still an effective player, overpaid maybe, but effective and a true centerman. trading him for Smith makes absolutely no sense when you have Shaw, Caggiula, and Kampf on the roster. To add to that, trading him only makes sense if you are going to get a center to replace him at the 3C position, which they haven't. David Kampf is NOT good enough to be your 3C if you want to be a good playoff team.

Now, the Kahun-Maatta trade also doesn't make sense if you're going to acquire De-Haan. I have definitely like Maatta so far in the preseason. He doesn't look as slow as everyone has been screaming about and he makes good decisions with the puck. I like him as a player, however the trade just wasn't necessary with De-Haan on your roster and the extra mult-year large cap hit does nothing but hurt the teams future.
To go along with this, not having Maatta on the roster leaves a roster spot for Jokiharju which means you have no reason to trade him. Also, Kahun is a middle 6 forward who can easily play on any of the top 3 lines and is productive. You don't need to take a question mark on Nylander.

Overall this roster is better than the one they are about to start the season with. Their top-9 is dangerous. Every line. Their 4th line is a STRONG shutdown line with Kampf (lefty) and Carpenter (righty) being able to switch off draws and each only taking them on their strong side.
You have flexibility with Shaw and Caggiulla being able to play anywhere in your lineup.
You can toss Perlini in and out of the lineup for a scoring punch.

The defense is very solid. A strong offensive pairing in Keith-Gus as we saw last year. You could potentially have a VERY good shutdown pairing in De-Haan-Murphy and have Seabrook a healthy scratch every other game with Holm-Joki and Joki-Seabs pairings being a consistent rotation.

The goalie situation is obviously great.

Overall this team is better both at forward and defense. This team would be a playoff lock IMO.

I think timing as a lot to do with some of this. Bowman needed a stay at home Dman and who honestly could have predicted that CAR was going to give away DeHaan and Saarela (you still have on the team) for basically nothing. Forsling isn't good, but Forsberg could maybe one day be ok. I do hear ya on AA. I think that 3rd line could be quite good! I also hear ya on having Joki back. I don't really care how Nylander is doing in preseason. Joki's played real games and was REALLY good last year.

Totally agree with almost everything you said. My one issue is that I think Maatta is going to play a large role with this team this year and hopefully excel. When he’s healthy, he’s a legit top-4 defenseman. It sucks we lost Kahun, but I think the trade off will prove fair, especially if Kubalik/Nylander get in and play well.

Otherwise, really good points

What you're pointing out here is simply a failure on Bowman's part for not doing his due diligence on checking the market for players before making the Maatta-Kahun trade. Nothing happened between June 15th and June 24th on the CAR side to make De-Haan all of the sudden available.

De-Haan is also a legit top-4 guy. I have really liked Maatta so far, that's not the issue. The issue is that you traded for both De-Haan and Maatta who have substantial contracts when they play the same role. Only one was needed and we gave up a legit middle 6 forward for Maatta, and also completely shut out Joki which then prompted the trade.
I also do think De-Haan will overall be a better shutdown guy than Maatta.

I don't actually agree with that. In fact, the opposite is more likely to be true in my...imo... We do know with a decent amount of certainty (I wasn't in the room to be honest) that Forsling asked for a trade BECAUSE of the Maatta trade. So that trade is like the turn or the river to use a poker analogy. Brings in new information and another round of betting. It's possible Bowman would have preferred to keep Forsling, but is now forced to do check the market's pulse for some Forsling. I don't think any GM has an EXACT pulse on what each of his players are worth to each team. Every GM should have a good estimate though. With that said...this is all conjecture. Odds are that you're probably right. Just that we don't know for sure. Good thoughts!

I follow the Blackhawks like its my religion and never even heard a whisper of Forsling asking for a trade.
In fact it was thought by many in the media and many fans that Forsling would be traded in the offseason either way because the Hawks had basically moved on from him and were now letting Dahlstrom and Koekkoek play.

I think the more likely scenario is Bowman actually wants both players because he wasn't sure which player would work/fit well. Which again is poor management.
