Minnesota is the next Detroit, with tons of veterans on long, expensive contracts with no way to get rid of them. But unlike Detroit, they don't have anything to show for it.

The aav is fine...actually I would have been okay with a higher aav in favor of a shorter term...and really it's the term that really kills the deal for me.

He'll be nearly 31 when this deal kicks in. What a joke. These are the exact types of deals that cripple a franchise for years. This makes the Seabrook deal look a lot better!

Makes the 3.4m more expensive, the 10.9m X7 22 year old Marner deal look good.

I'll never understand why these teams continue to make the same old mistakes again and again. This contract is the definition of insanity. Marner is like 7 1/2 years younger. The comparison isn't even close. MIN is basically assured of being a bottom 3 team in the Central for the next 10 years with all of these 35+ year old contracts.

Minnesot'a biggest issue is their owner, who refuses to sanction a tear-down/rebuild. The Wild are not going to be contenders any time soon. Spurgeon could have net valuable draft/prospect assets but instead the team will continue to try to contend.

BRUH ... they still got Parise + Suter locked up on team friendly deals for another 6 years ... at a bargain price of only $15,100,000.

PLUS ... their both only 35 ... so they definitely still have some room to grow.

NOW ... add in the Zuccarello signing ... he's basically a rookie at 32 ... and all it took was $6,000,000 x 5 years to get him.

SOO ... if Big Zook is already putting up 40 point seasons in his early 30's ... what kind of records will the Great 5'8 be breaking in his late 30's?

AND ... don't even get me started on Eric Staal's potential ... the dude is only 15 years removed from a 100 point season !

SMH ... This team isn't just a contender ... it should grow into a dynasty ... you are delusional good sir.

He's better than OEL, Ekblad, Trouba, Carlson, Byfuglien, probably Subban and Weber, too.

What's a perfect team? A team with the best six defensemen in the league?

I sort of agree with this, there's definitely a chance that the AAV will be a bit high in the last two years or so, but then again, the cap will be higher.

HAHAHAHA you're nuts man. Spurgeon isn't better than any of those guys. I don't care what your "fancy" stats tell you. He's a #3 defensemen all day long

Problem is that MIN can't exactly start a rebuild w/ Suter, Parise, Zucc, etc... still under long term contracts. They're sort of in the same position that DET and ANA were in a couple years ago, only worse. But, they could make the playoffs this season. Especially if some of their core players bounce back.

Well then ... thank goodness Montreal has a #1D like Shea Weber locked up for 7 more years at a team friendly $8,000,000.

Montreal better have some cap-space freed up for his extension though ... I'm sure 43 will be the new 33 by then.

I shouldn't even have to explain myself. It's not even worth arguing with you because it's clear you see it how you want to see it and nothing is going to change that.

I'm sure he will be retired then or put on LTIR for his career. Nothing worth stressing about. He's still a DFD that puts up 40+ points a season. Even then, it will be a contract a team wants to reach the cap floor because he's only paid $1,000,000 from 23-24 and on

This is a good contract for a team that isn't the Minnesota Wild. People are clearly turning their brains off at this moment and comparing this to Provorov, Morrisey and Werenski's deals, when those 3 are RFAs and Spurgeon is a pending UFA. He's a top pair quality defenseman so he's worth the contract, the only problem is the Wild are in no position to compete, and probably should've traded him now or at the TDL (unless they already have an agreement with him and are planning on trading him post-extension).

Those teams don't really exist anymore ... as of this summer.

And they usually look for 1-2 year deals in that situation ... you may not have that kind of cap space 3-4 years later.

Why do you think that? Teams are always going to take on (-) cap to get assets. It's not as hard as you may believe to get rid of that Weber contract

Whatever his caphit, Weber's actual salary is 6 millions for 3 more years and then basically free. A deal compared to that spurgeon contract.

When the @radovan guy thinks Spurgeon deserves the same contrat as Hedman, why botter arguing... The survey tells it all...

Most people seem to hate it, but I think it's a fair contract. However, it is on a team loaded with veterans who have some term on their contracts still.

No NMC, so could be traded/retained and get picks.

If you had said that about Dumba, I might've believed you. Not going to say anything with certainty though, as I don't watch many Wild games.

I have nothing against the Wild but they have been stuck in mediocrity for a long while. A comparison. Folks complain about about the Leafs paying 40.4m for their top 4 players . Next year Wild top four salaries Suter, Parise Sprurgeon and Zuccharllo 28.6m Now tell me what group of players would you rather have for the next five years. That 12m in difference is great on ice value for the Leafs.
