Was this a good signing?

So who wins the prize for getting closet to the correct amount? I need a search of all Marner ACGM contracts made capfriendly.

I thought that teams could only go 10% over the cap in the summer. Leafs are 16.4% over.

no it doesn't because numbers are misleading.... remember escrow to signing bonuses.

Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Tavares combine for half the cap. Good luck signing Rielly and Andersen when the time comes.

The new us deal and an expansion draft will have gone by then. Are you really starting this **** THE DAY Marner signed? Christ you're as bad as the media.

Absolute overpayment. Dubas doesn't realize there's a salary cap does he?

Once Dubas gave into Nylander last season he was screwed for the Matthews and Marner negotiations. Nylander's holdout taught Marner and his agent that eventually they'd get exactly what they wanted and Dubas would relent. They probably should've traded Nylander before they signed him to that ridiculous six year contract anyway. In my opinion, that was the more egregious of the 3 recent big money RFA deals.

2M to much for Matthews

And ppl will still talk about "slight overpayment" and "new era"......

What was he supposed to do?

presumably signing bonuses are free from escrow and escrow % vary from year to year( I don't know current %). The player earns total salary for year apart from AAV. total salary equals base salary (presumably is applicable to escrow) plus signing bonus (isnt applicable to escrow). then u calc per entire contract.

LTIR can be used during the offseason if the players being put on LTIR have a doctor say they're going to miss the beginning of the season, so Horton and Clarkson's relief is enough to get them within 10% of the upper limit

Sets the presence for the time being. It will drop again when a RFA takes a hometown discount

Players taking discounts doesn’t usually set the market, since players will obviously choose comparables to the higher paid players.

Signing bonuses are very much applicable to escrow (and can be a significant driver of any year's given escrow %); escrow amounts are all about "Actual Club Salary" (i.e. the actual dollar amounts paid out by clubs in a given year) and whether or not the aggregated Actual Club Salary exceeds the aggregated salary cap/floor midpoint in any given quarter.

Yes, but if it’s obvious they took a discount it doesn’t really do anything. For example if anyone tried to compare to Stamkos or Kucherov, it would be brushed off as “that’s just Tampa, they have no income tax, and their players take discounts”.

Pretty sure Dubas ruined the entire NHL Market

Throwing 11 Million at Tavares, holding out on Nylander and caving in, Giving Matthews the term he wants and overpaid, holding out with Marner and caving in

So nothing on NYR signing Panarin for 11.64? What about Keller signing for 7.15? 11 million at Tavares is a steal.... Dubas did a great job in my opinion. He may have overpayed here and there, but the actual alternative was losing the player for a year or having to trade them. He got them all under long term deals with a rising cap through their best years... Where is the issue here?

Marner and his representatives made it big time.

Singled you out because you’re rational.the contract is an overpay... for the last 3 months we knew it would be. Marner and his camp were fastened to 11.6m x 5. Dubas needed to get this deal done. I just gave this poll an up vote. For the situation and issues on all sides... dubas shaved 800k off and got an extra year. As funny as it sounds dubas has always wanted to make sure players buy in and they are happy with everything off ice. If you look at most of my agm’s they are 6 x 10.5m.,. So an extra 300k it isn’t great but who would have thought that Mitch would be the next big forward signed after Aho...

I think the best case scenario of this contract is that it looks like the Krejci deal in that it is fair for the production. Either way it is always better to overpay young guys to term than shirt deals or old guys to term. It's not a very good contract from the team sense, but it's workable within the cap (Crosby and Malkin took a much larger combined %) and a liveable deal.

I'm just glad it's over

Overpaid. Bum. Should have traded him. Not worth it. He didnt cut the leafs a break. Boo him every game.

Why pay him more than the highest tier for an offer sheet? Makes no sense. No reason why Dubas had to pay the extra $400k at a minimum. No team was gonna give up four 1st's obviously at this point.

Obviously it wasn't a troll post, it was just someone looking at it form a non biased standpoint. I negotiate financial contracts for a living. Marner's camp did a damn good job and while it may seem like a lot now, the Leafs will be loving this contract in 5 years or less. The same thing the Hawks fans said when Kane and Toews got theirs....it was record breaking at the time and lots of Hawks fans were pissed. Guess what...nobody is complaining now.

Oh they'll analyze and analyze this for decades. Every broadcast be it TSN or Sportsnet will analyze this until he retires. They'll be contractually obligated to discuss this forever.
