Mitch Marner Trade

Description
I don't think Mitch Marner deserves more than $11M, no matter the term. John Tavares has historically inflated his wingers value beyond what they truly are, and there is no reason to think Marner is any different.

So, to avoid overpaying a winger on a team that already has two monster contracts, I found a team that has the room to overpay: CBJ. On a line with Tavares, Josh Anderson could conceivably hit 30+ goals and 60+ points (see: Anders Lee with and without Tavares). Obviously the picks are suggestive, and could include some conditions to make sure they aren't too high/too low for either team, but I think this deal is a good baseline.

Let me know why you think this is a terrible idea in the comments.

i don't think CBJ is going to trade two lottery picks for marner, even though he comes with a ton of value. they didn't have a first in 2017 or 2019, and their core just split.

the right trade partner for a marner deal would be an otherwise fringe playoff team with strong goal scoring talent that marner could elevate to a contender...like toronto

Anders Lee GSVA was putrid with Tavares though. His GSVA last season represented that of a legit top liner, whereas with Tavares he was more like a middle sixer. Tavares really isn't that magical

CBJ probably think long and hard about this. Would depend on their ability to sign him and for how long.

i really am pulling for columbus to be good. i really am. but cbj lost their only PPG player, and their goaltending next season is a guy with a .897 career sv% and a guy who has literally never played a game in north america.

You say Marner's 26 goals were inflated by Tavares, want a guy that scored 27 goals AND 2 1st rd picks for the right to pay him ~ 11 mil????

I don't disagree with you on the fringe playoff team point being a good trading partner. What I will say is that CBJ lost high level talent in the off-season. A trade for Marner would at address some of that....there's something to be said about that.

I don't know man....on the one hand non Leafs fans say Marner should be paid blahblahblah....and then when someone presents a somewhat sensible trade there's comments like yours.

Which is it? Is Marner talented and deserving of 11-12 million dollars on whatever term he's looking for? Or not?

I'm just saying....playing both sides of the argument really shows that non Leafs fans are mostly just trolling and not bringing much logic to the conversation.

That's largely due to team defense improving after the coaching change and goaltending improvements with Lehner, as possession numbers and goal differential factor into a player's GSVA. Tavares has long been considered a good two way player and had positive relative numbers on the Islanders in 2018. You can't doubt his ability to make his linemates better. Guys like Okposo, Stempniak, and Moulson all had career seasons with Tavares and fell off after they left the team.
