True but we have a cap crunch next year too with Nike/Morrissey/Roslovic/Appleton up and the 1.44 cap hit next year wouldn't help

As this seems like a good solution, It is NOT allowed.
You cannot buyout a player and then sign them within the next year (I think it's a year)
Thus why you have seen Orpik to Colorado type of trades

Edit: Wait, so you actually are allowed to do this?

You are if it's not a compliance buyout (which were only a thing right after the 2013 lockout), and while you do save some cap overall, completing a buyout is not as simple as saying you've bought a guy out (like when Michael Scott loudly "declared" bankruptcy on The Office). Before initiating a buyout, you have to offer the player on unconditional waivers and the player has to clear, so if you were buying out a player with intent to re-sign them in the future as a way to slightly lessen your total cap obligation, you'd only want to do it on players that you'd be relatively certain wouldn't get claimed (i.e. bad players on bad contracts). Plus, even if it works and you complete the buyout and re-sign the guy, you've only slightly lessened your total cap obligation to that player. Kulikov currently has a hit of 4.33M, but by the end of year 2 in this scenario you've still dedicated 3.588M to him over the two seasons, so it's a whole lot of shenanigans just to kick the can down the road while retaining a mediocre to bad player.

True but that's a year from now. This would give them more time to open up cap space for the future. It doesn't solve a problem but it sure delays it to the point of having enough time to get out from under any cap problems. It also makes players contracts 1 year less long. Perreault for example. Maybe nobody wants him for two years but on an expiring contract in which WPG maybe retains a bit? I think all of a sudden he's way more palatable for some teams to take on.

The goal here was to A) Keep Kulikov. B) free up some cap in order to sign both Laine and Connor C) Divert some cap to next year but gives themselves some extra time to make moves in season to ensure they are cap compliant for next year.

We're not talking about a ton of cap here but if the difference between compliant and not is a million bucks or so, this deal maneuver does just that.
