Apparently the NHL allowed it due to Valimaki getting hurt.

That only applies to the post-2013 lockout compliance buyouts, nothing else in the CBA prevents signing a guy you just bought out if it's not a compliance buyout.

It's certainly uncommon (not sure if it's happened before), but in CBA Article 50.9 (i) (i) regarding "Ordinary Course Buyouts" there is no language that restricts where a player can sign following the buyout, while Article 50.9 (i) (ii) concerning "Compliance Buyouts" explicitly prohibits a player from rejoining the club that used a compliance buyout on him. Panelists on TV might have been wrong or may have been talking about a guy who got a compliance buyout.
