So if 7M is worth it for a PPG player then why are the PPG RFAs avialable are asking for 10M ?

They are asking for 10M but that does not mean they will get 10M

There's definitely some risk in this since his underlying numbers aren't good, and his production took a dip. However, Keller is the kind of player I wouldn't mind making a big bet on at this point in his career. He's not worth this contract right now, but he certainly could be in a couple years. Plus, with all the delayed RFA signings this year, Chayka was likely wary of going into next offseason with Keller unsigned.

Could be a steal in the future. But $7.15M for 8 years after having 14 goals, 47 points, and a -21 rating? A little risky.

What's risky is judging a contract with stats only...

Might as well say Carey Price...Hayes is a VERY different player than Keller and a UFA. 2-way Center vs pure scoring winger than hasn't done it yet? Maybe it works out. Maybe it doesn't, but this feels to me like Chayka is outsmarting himself. It feels like the reason he did this was to prove to everyone else that he can get his RFA locked up without an RFA fight next year...but he very well could have just lost the fight today instead of having the fight next year....or even better.....allowing Keller to prove something on the ice. Bridge deals are an option too. Only time will tell.

No wonder other RFAs are holding out. If Keller gets this much what can other expect. Don't get me wrong I like how Keller plays and what he brings to the game but the amount seems a little bit high and the term looks too risky.

That's a big "if". He scored an average of 56 points in his first 2 seasons while playing all 82 games both seasons. 70+ is a big number.

I don't think boosting his production/82 by 15 points is a big ask given he will have more talent around him this year and most top offensive players break out between NHL GP #200 to 300. I used the Scheifele deal as a reference point for Keller, which now looks like an amazing deal as he jumped up to PPG levels in year 4. My expectation is that Chayka is betting on a similar year 4 jump from Keller, but I agree there is an element of risk in the "if".

From a long term perspective it seems like a fairly solid deal. In saying that that it is based on his continued development and uptick in his point totals. This could go either way but I'm leaning to a solid signing.

Chayka has a really clear strategy which is to lock up his core long-term. What's interesting to me is he's willing to do so with guys that it seems haven't really broken out quite yet.

The real reason You want to get RFAs down is because you can make trades knowing where you are in the Cap having a big RFA I Signed basically freezes you from making any big free agent signings or Trades also in the next 9 years there is a good chance Keller hits 60+ points in almost every year and even some 70 point seasons as well

Boy... I like Keller but this is an overpay...
The gap between those who judge a player by counting stats and those who take in other aspects will continue to widen, and this contract is a prime example.

This is just crazy.

57 millions garanted for a guy that hasn't proved anything in the NHL.

How much does Mckinnon makes again?

This is exactly how MacKinnon's deal was signed. Guy took off after he signed not before

MacKinnon had good underlying metrics at the time of signing.
Keller on the other hand...

Damn 8 years, it’s gonna be alright for the first 2 years but every year after that is low key a steal for the Coyotes. They have hella good youngins and are gonna be scary in the future

Meh deal now, good deal in a couple of years.

Quoting: Kylonetic8
This makes sense long term.

People saying that this will be a steal in a few years follow the flawed mentality that all players progress linearly and must improve from x age to x age, which makes even less sense when you consider that Keller regressed this season. At its best, this contract will be fair.

MacKinnon had a far higher cieling and fewer large holes in his game than Keller.

Again you are right in your analysis

Rantanen is next. 5 years, $8m per.

Worth way more than this, but hopefully takes it to be a team player
