Teams don't trade for "rights". What is Laine's proposed salary... I image it would put the Sabres well over their cap.

They trade for RFA rights all the time. Trouba's rights were traded about 2 months ago

Have to agree with @BCAPP here. Players rights are certainly traded. Buffalo may have to make some moves to make it fit.

I dont even think the sabres take the trade as is no way they are mortgaging their entire center future for another goal scorer. (They already have skinner)
Not saying skinner is on the same level but the same type of player

I want to bookmark this to bring it up in 10 years...

But then I realized I don't have to.

By age 20

Patrik Laine: 237 gp 110 g 184 pts
Sam Reinhart 88 gp 23 g 43 pts

In Sam Reinharts total career which goes to 23
331 gp 87 g 205 pts

So in 94 more games and at 3 years closer to his prime instead of mostly teenaged years, Reinhart has 23 LESS goals and 21 more points.

You have to be high to make that statement.

So are many 3rd and 4th liners. Laine is thus far looking like a generational goal scorer.

He's 4th ALL TIME in goals scored by his age

And that's fair if it doesn't meet their organizational needs. Value wise though it's appropriate

Your trading 2 legit number 2C who can push the offense for a bad.cap player and a good goal scorer to a team that has Eichel. Idk if is would be worth it at all for the sabres.

Agreed except it's incredible goal scorer for two young prospects with good chance for top 6 c.

But yeah not sure it makes sense for buffalo

Laine is better, i cant argue that. Hes more dynamic and guys that score goals like that just get more respect. Im not even a big reinhart fan, but if laine is a 40 goal 70 point guy, and reinhart is a 25 goal 70 point guy- the add cant be a talented enigmatic rhd whose stock is at an all time low, a recent 8oa center who is cost controlled and looking to break out, and take little as a cap dump to boot. Im guessing the results would be shockingly bad, little would be the second line center until cozens is ready, and the rest of the sabres center depth is anonymous henchmen. We would be leaning on our pp every game, with one line again doing all of the heavy lifting 5v5. Its too much.

Umm Trouba trade much? I think knowing Buffalo they would give Laine whatever he wants no matter how stupid that would be. Probably a 5x11.5

Trouba was guaranteed a 5.5m contract as his qualifying offer. Sure Trouba had to agreed to that at a minimum, there was no way he was going sit out a year and then hope to get a big UFA deal.
No teams don't give players "what they want". Sabres happen to be in a cap league.

True and if I remember Andersen was signed within days, and really traded for a pick. So teams knew what the signing price will be. This new era of high priced RFA who haven't been yet and wide variance in $$$$ makes me say these RFAs aren't going to traded without a contract. Imagine the leverage Laine would have if the Sabres have traded away three regulars and just got Little in return. Still don't think the trade is cap friendly for Sabres. Sabres trading away 10m,,,and getting 5.6 little Mittlestadt's replacement so that 6.6m and what is line come in at...even 9m 15.6m. a 5.5m difference.
These teams that have these RFA...some have negotiating for over a year and still unsigned. Don't think any of other teams think their offers are going to be much different. Do these teams want to go through the hassle of a non signee two weeks from training camp.
