Pretty big overpayment for Koivu. he is 36 years old and was injured last season and still wasn't anything special when healthy. Maybe remove namestnikov and it'll be a little better.

this is a weird trade to evaluate from a value perspective. staal has negative value. namestnikov and strome are 7m for two mid-20s replacement level players. the NY 2nd is the most valuable piece in the entire trade. but it's for a 36-year-old replacement level player. i don't think anyone involved would be excited about this trade.

Koivu was still as effective on keeping opposing top lines off the score sheet most nights until his injury, so if you ignore his injury he was still useful. Unfortunately his injury was serious and it remains to be seen how he'll return so this trade doesn't make any sense for the Rangers. The 2nd is the only thing of interest for the Wild, unless they can flip the other pieces at the deadline so yeah.. not exactly an enticing trade for either team.

Getting rid of Staals entire contract is a big win for the Rangers. Koivu isn't a star anymore but he also only has one year left on his contract. He can split time with Chytil/Andersson at the #2 C slot, taking some pressure off the them and giving them one more year to develop.
