on the off-chance that you do happen to be serious and also receptive to logic, here's some food for thought:
1) Holland was the one that made this trade, not Marino. getting traded away from the OIlers was kinda out of Marino's hands.
2) rumors had been that Marino didn't want to sign with the Oilers. however, he was also hilariously low on the Oilers' defensive depth chart and had an enormous number of people to compete with. feeding into point #3:
3) put yourself in his shoes. if you had the choice between a job you really liked where you had to compete with a bunch of equally-skilled people at said job and a job that you liked about the same but had fewer people trying to compete for said job, which one would you take? dude's a 6th-round pick; most of them don't make it to the NHL. he has the chance to play hockey at a professional level, his dream job. I sincerely doubt he cares more about who's offering him his dream job at this point in his life than having the option in the first place.

well, from the team's perspective, it's better than having him exercise the rights he gets from the CBA to go play somewhere else after his senior year, should he desire to.

besides, the dude has, like, zero competition in Wilkes/Barre. the AHL has limits on how many games vets like Zach Trotman can play, and he's the only other right-shot defender on an ELC. he's gonna get all the ice-time he wants.

these are the rules the players union and the NHL agreed on.
He has his rights to not sign with anyone he doesn't want to.
If the NHL didn't want to agree to such rules they should have never agreed, but they traded this off in return for other benefits.
People seem to think players should have no rights. It's a give and take relationship. You wants something, you have to give something. He's well with in his rights to do as he wishes.

It's a great signing for the penguins. He's worth more than a 6th, he's a solid player from a good program.

We didn't have any space for him on the AHL roster. He obviously wanted to turn pro this fall and didn't want to play in the ECHL... I think Berglund and Kemp have more upside anyhow, so I'm happy with the 6th round pick.

the draft isn't this holy, sacrosanct process that is the ultimate determiner of a player's career in every single aspect. it's a huge guessing game about which players might be good hockey players for each team, is the point. there's not even a 1:1 correspondence between draft order and "how good you will ultimately be as a hockey player" (it's more like an inverse relationship, where talent drops off really fast in the first round and then levels out, such that most rounds are similar in terms of probability of even making the NHL).

that is the reality of any sports draft where you have to make qualitative evaluations. you're guessing.

That's a LOT of performance bonuses for a 6th round pick! And he got the maximum salary too!

I mean, you wanna get a dude to forgo a Harvard degree and play pro hockey, you gotta do that sometimes. this, I think, happens fairly often with NCAA players that teams are trying to convince to jump ship from college and play in the NHL.

besides, the P-bonuses aren't that likely to get paid out, and, if he does make the Penguins' roster, I highly doubt upper management will be that displeased about shelling out the P-bonuses.
