Description
Bobby Ryan had 40+ points last year on a bad Ottawa team. I think it is possible for him to fit nicely with Krejci at a lesser cap hit. Ottawa/Melnyk wants him gone bad retaining part of his salary helps that. They take on Backes (assuming he waives). Possibly add Senyshyn or another 6-10 ranked bruins prospect to the trade to sweaten the deal.

Ottawa would want a lot more out of that trade if they retain salary.

If Ottawa is retaining that much salary, not a chance are they also taking on the Backes deal.

Was Ryan's contract front loaded or is he being paid his full AAV at this point?

Really can't see Ottawa retaining that much on him if they want to trade him.

He's being paid his AAV. Backes is only owed 5M across the next two seasons which is exactly what Melnyk woud want. Not having to pay him.

I see, someone said on here before what Backes is being paid exactly but I can't remember what it was.
This does seem like something that'd appeal to Melnyck but I can't see him retaining that much.

Ottawa should be fine with retaining $1.25 million on Ryan and swapping him for Backes. Boston doesn't need to add any sweeteners for that. Ottawa maintains 7.25 million cap hit for 2 years but pays significantly less in actual dollars.

It's better than what they did to get rid of Phaneuf. Ottawa wants to get rid of him. They bring back leadership in Backes, good defensive prospect and a second. Like I said in the description maybe another prospect to sweaten the deal.

That swap adds term for Boston it isn't worth it then. They would need to clear cap space to do this.

The Phaneuf deal worked out great for Ottawa. Gaborik went on LTIR, so they save a lot of actual money, and Phaneuf was bought out so the actual impact of the retained salary is negligible. The only thing left to do is to offer Dion a job on the Sens Development coaching staff. They still need a solid dman influence in that group.

The Sens are not in a financial position to pay a guy 3.25×3 to not play for us. They don't even give that kind of money or term TO Play For Us! since 2016, the Sens have signed a whopping two contracts that exceed that cap hit and term. Mike Hoffman (4×5.1875mil) and Zack Smith (4×3.25mil). That's it.

They gain an extra year in term but get a player that can be productive in using that $6 million cap rather than Backes who is being used as a reserve. But I'm not a fan of trading assets to free up cap space. That's a very Leafy thing to do.

Lol, saves Melnyk roughly 10-11m over 3 years. Exactly the type of move they would make. ??‍♂️

Here’s a fun stat.

Since joining the B’s Backes has averaged 17g per 82 games while battling injuries and losing PT. In the same time frame Ryan has averaged 17g per 82 games.

At most I could see the Sens retaining would be $2.25M, maybe they take Miller for the season idk.
Would all depend on Backes waiving though which isn't likely to happen.
This is the kind of move that would appeal to Melnyk though.. Lol.. The Sens must be a money losing organization to be constantly looking for these cheap contracts.

Pretty sure I heard somewhere that Zaitsev is only getting paid $1.5M this season so I'm guessing that's why Ottawa wanted him but I'm not sure how his contract works next season, if he's due his full $4.5M I wouldn't be surprised to see Zaitsev on the move again.. Lol

That’s just it. They can pay 22.5m over 3 years to Ryan for mediocre production on a mediocre team. Or the so something like this retain 3m on Ryan, buyout Backes and it saves 11m out of pocket, plus they add a couple of decent assets. The retention and buyout cap hit help them stay above the cap floor the next couple of years while keeping payroll down and they can play the kids getting their feet wet for when it’s time for them to actually make some noise.

I'm not sure what you didn't understand? It was very simple. Stats show that when Cup series are played the team with the most Canadians on the roster tends to win.

probably not engaging with you but are there stats that show that Libra's also win more cups? Who cares? Backes is also american?? I'm just so confused.

I think Ottawa would accept the deal if their retention was $1.25. As noted in previous posts no further sweeteners would be needed. to help offset the difference between the retention values of $3.25 and $1.25 ($2.00) perhaps the B's can unload Miller with an AAV of $2.50. Just saying. This post may actually have some legs to it; however I am on the fence about having to dispose of assets to take on a little more term.

I would just like to see a bit more of a Canadian element to the team. Since Sweeney has taken over he has went with a larger percentage of Americans and the last couple times the Bruins went to the finals and lost they played teams with a higher percentage of Canadians. I wish they would just get Krejci someone for the right side, really anyone at this point.
