This could be the year of growth for Babcock. It depends on how much he values employment.

Babcock and "coaching growth", seems to be a huge contradiction. IMO Babcock enjoys being an NHL coach, so he values his employment. Just don't think he is that good at his job. He's replaced next May.

You're right. These guys are still living the dream. 650K whether as a Leaf, a press box Leaf or a Marlie....it's a great life for an athlete. It's going to end sometime....enjoy it as long as it goes.

I remember listening to ex Blue Jay Rick Bosetti. He was an original Blue Jay...a centre fielder, really a fringe MLBer. A few years later he was traded to the Cubs. Shortly after he waived and asked to report to the minors. He salary was going from 150,000 at MLB to 80,000 at AAA. He was upset at the pay cut and thinking he was going to buried forever. So without a plan, he quit baseball. Remember this about 1981. During the interview he said " "How foolish that was quitting baseball. Do you know how difficult for a person to make 80,000 a a year in the real world."

This is the truthiest post I've read in a long time. And it's why I get a little annoyed with the narrative that athletes are being disrespected with certain contract offers.

When some of these nhlers are likely to take down 100M during their careers and yet they "feel" slighted I can only chuckle at the ego that must be involved with players, agents and the rest of the vultures that circle the golden goose.

With the Leafs currently being at 48 player contracts, and Marner still left to sign and Neuvrith coming in on a PTO, as well as others, I think the Leafs are still going to make some moves before the season starts.

this thread is why no one likes leafs fans

Without Leaf fans or Leaf Haters to criticize Leaf fans, the 1,000,000 posts on CapFriendly would dwindle to 100,000. Not financial affordable for the owners of CapFriendly. Long live 1967applaud

PS. This thread is just fine....lots of other thread that cause more Leaf distain. How many pages did the Borgman.Schmaltz trade get. Way too many.

I'd put money on Babs going with Marincin. He loves that kid on the PK despite him making the dumbest decisions at least once a game.

This

Mikheyev will be in on lw with Johnsson and more I believe. Babs and dubas have pretty much confirmed that. Also spezza will be 3/4c depending on whether kerfoot plays the wing. Would imagine they start kerfoot at 3c out of camp.

I truly hope Mikheyev will only patch till Hyman comes back and after he should be put low. Next year Cap situation will be no better then this years, cca14M to sign three Ds ( dependable of Marner AAV ) and i dont think they should be so dumb again to repeat Johnsson and Kapanen "mistake", cause if Mikheyev will start to mass points leetching on Matthews - Nylander line, he'll be 40 Pointer in his "rookie" season and will be gone next Off-season cause unaffordable. Keep kid in fourth line, extend him for 2 x 850k and play him big later, inbetween play Moore in mentioned line who will be 40 Pointer at 775K.

My try

Hyman - Tavares - Marner............Mikheyev till Hyman comes back
Moore - Matthews - Nylander.......pumping Moore to be 40 Points for two years, trade him at TDL 2021 ( Mikheyev, Marchment, Engvall incoming for Hyman style LW )
Johnsson - Kerfoot - Kapanen
Åberg- Shore - Spezza

Rielly - Ceci
Muzzin - Barrie
Marincin - Schmaltz...........till Dermott comes back, then Marincin and Dermott

Press : Mikheyev / Petan and Holl / Schmaltz

I doubt they really approach line up decisions that way though. I'm sure that every effort is made to ice the best team/lines for success, even if I disagree with alot of those decisions.

I hope Mikheyev knocks it outta the park. And if he does then pay the man and make changes where needed. If he doesn't, then I hope Moore knocks it outta the park, and if he does then pay that man when the time comes. And if not him, then Marchment, or Bracco or anyone else that can make things happen.

The problem that i see noone here and in coach staff thinks strategically. The times when TML didnt need to care about $$ are over....kids are croping Premium Contracts now and maneuvers like that aka moneyballing are obligated form of planning the future. Ask VGK and how Gusev playing for them turned out....

I agree with you to some extent. I think we would move on from Hyman and keep mikheyev. I think the depth on lw will have to be Hyman,Johnsson, mikheyev and Moore. I think if mikheyev proves nhl good and should be moved up the lineup you sign him in season to a 2-3 year deal before he gets any big numbers. Even if he does get a Johnsson type deal and you move in from Hyman it still fits next year.

I don't know. For the first time in my life it seems like the leafs have a front office that is thinking, and acting, strategically. That's really the function of the GM and his staff.

I think we open alot of doors to trouble if we're asking the coaching staff to do that. The only strategic thinking they should be doing is about how they win hockey games, with a bit of leeway built in around how to best develop individual players overtime.. and on that, I actually think Babcock is doing a decent job I.e. Mo, Hyman, Johnson, Kap, Dert, even Mitch.

But if we're asking leaf fans to think and act strategically then we're definately in for a world of hurt... our job is to be emotional wink

Exactly what im talking about, you dont want to sign another Zaitsev contract after one-year wonder or loose the kid cause unable to sign him.

I have both Hyman ( Expansion Draft and to expensive after 4 x 40 points ) and Moore ( TDL and height as his handicap for "checking guy" ) gone, Mihkeyev, Engvall, Johnsson and Marchment being the LWs playing Hymans role. and speedy RWs with Marner, Nylander, Kapanen and Bracco.

Everything is set in front, time to take care about D now....

Deliberately suppressing a players success to get a deal on him, is really short sighted and all around poor asset management. If Mikheyev does well, GREAT! And if that means he'll want more next year, and he doesn't fit, trade him for good assets. If he's better than Kap or Johnsson, move one of those guys. Have many high priced assets is never a problem. They can be moved to fill holes elsewhere. Having holes and no cap space to fill those holes and bad contracts on top of all that is what cap hell is.

Really weak? Kerfoot, Kapanen and possibly Johnsson for a 3rd line is far from weak. I love how Hab fans jump on these threads throwing shade while having a worse team. Shouldn't you wait to see if your team makes the playoffs before talking trash?
