A) if you are retaining 2m on him, you wont have to send a 1st and a 3rd. likely just a 3rd. B) Why are you retaining any cap on him, he is owed 5m total cash out of his 12m cap hit. ottawa just essentially took callahan (ltir money insured) for a cap dump themselves. Who knows their angle but they wont retain money to move backes.

All good points, I put the retained salary because Ottawa was just an example and I felt it would allow for more options on where to ship him. However in hindsight I'd probably only attach a second on the deal because of that.
