This is the type of gamble that seems worthwhile. He is the right age, has made the right amount of progress, has the right skill set, and this is the right amount of money to really gain something. In reality, as long as he doesn't turn out to be a bottom pair talent, this will a very good bet. If he turns into a good #3 this is a solid team-friendly deal, and there is potential this turns into a very very big value.
I have seen Girard play a little, and he seems to be quite mobile and heady with the puck, and those tend to be the best bets. His microstats show that he is good at moving the puck up the ice and out of his zone, and in general, those type of D seem to progress better in the long run.
