A team like the Devils can afford this gamble. If he plays well and elevates the team, it could be another incentive for Hall to stay

If Hall won't re-sign by Opening Night I think the Devils should strongly consider trading him. A Tavares repeat would be beyond disastrous. They already have an amazing young core of forwards and receiving a boatload of picks and prospects could be worthwhile rather than paying him $12M+ AAV on an 8 year deal, which he'll clearly be looking for.

I dont know why people say its a risk, he just put up 82 pts in 62 and last year he had similar stats to panarins last year in the KHL

Very little downside here when you look at the Devils cap space. This trade and subsequent contract just illustrates the value of cap space and how teams like the Devils can leverage it to acquire players at a bargain. Teams like EDM are being held hostage by their cap situation and become stuck near the bottom of the standings.

I don't get it. Why are people calling 4,5mil an overpayment for a top line winger. Or is it a joke that I'm not in on, like the "that's alot of term for a guy who's never skated in the NHL" whenever a rookie sign an elc?

Because you can't tell if the player can translate his game from a league to another.

defiantly an over payment for a guy who hasnt played a game in nhl. but if a team was going to pick him up off knights it was nj or nyi as they have the cap space and need the offense.

My guess for next year: 50+ points, easy win for NJD, but still, VGK got decent return.

This deal isn't terrible when you look at guys like radulov and panarin, who are this guys closest comparables. He is a high skill player who will complement the top lines well. I wouldnt be surprised if hall hit a career high in goals and over 100 pts this year if he stays healthy. Big thing for Jersey is play of Schneider. This is also a good faith deal, where if it works well for Gusev they gave him a fair deal, and he would be inclined to resign. Overall a good signing.

Division rivals all keep getting better while Rutherford makes the two worst signings of the last two free agent classes... fcuk shero why couldn't you just fire bylsma bro we miss you lol

I am only going off historical values as those picks have a roughly 40% and 35% chance of yielding an NHL player.

And if you package that third with another pick, as my comment suggests, in return for another second, then your chance for getting an NHL player between the two seconds you'll have as a result is about 64%.

Yet GM's routinely hand out long term big money contracts to 30+ year olds who are already declining. The biggest problem GM's have is paying players for what they've done in the past rather than for what they project the player to do in the future. There are too many examples to list here, so I won't bother. Slowly but surely this concept is evolving. Just look at why Jake Gardiner is still unsigned. Veteran players are starting to get less term as nobody wants the next James Neal or Loui Eriksson on their payroll.

Interesting that they gave him a M-NTC as well. I would've held out on trade protections until I saw a bigger body of work in the NHL.

Put up better #'s than Panarin in the KHL yet everyone is automatically calling him a bust... makes sense

What makes Gusev a top line winger in the NHL? He's shown nothing, never skated a shift. Gusev is as much of an unknown in the NHL as a recent draft pick. Just because he produce in the KHL for a few years doesn't mean he can do it here.

I suspect you haven't seen him in action..

His skill level is top tier. The only thing I can see hold him back in the NHL is all the conservative North Americans who won't let skilled players play their game.

Nhl has gotten better in recent years getting rid of more and more goons. The only way to keep making it better is to bring in more skilled players and get rid of more "less talented but big heart" kind of players.

New Jersey is really pushing to become a good team again. Think they understand that the only chance Taylor Hall resigns is if they prove to him that he can win a cup in NJ.

Panarin's last 3 years in the KHL - 148 GP 57 G 120 pts, 38 playoff games 7 goals 29 points
Gusev's last 3 years in the KHL - 173 GP 63 G 215 pts, 51 playoff games 23 goals 53 pts

Both wingers, virtually the same size, Gusev is 9 months younger but many of the "experts" here are sure Gusev will be a bust while Panarin is an All Star and makes $11.6M............ok

panarin started when he was 24 and was on an elc. it's different.

i don't think gusev will end up a bust, but the expectations for him are very high and he could easily falter.
