Why should NYR give a 3rd when they are sending the obvious better player?

bit better, but you do need to clear some cap. if you pay JP his QO + the retained 1M, you'd still be saving 2M in cap. 2M you need to sign DeAngelo + Lemieux. You'd probably still need to buyout Shattenkirk/Smith/Staal though but at least you get a roster player back for Strome.

Not sure if any you guys watched Oiler game or just base your opinions on JP off his stats but if you did watch, you'd see a 3rd line checking winger who can skate at worst. If you unlock his potential, paying Strome + 3rd isn't so bad

I’ll do it if $3.1M is going all the way to Edmonton. Other than that well walk away from the deal. Puljujarvi as intriguing he is with Kakko, isn’t showing much while Strome has shown a capability of reaching 20-30 goals.

Strome has never cracked 20 goals in 6 years playing in the NHL so I'm not sure what capability you're talking about but I do understand about you doing it if all the salary was going back. Again, I think a better deal would be Strome + late 2nd rounder for JP because it'd be equal to late 3rd rounder + late 2nd rounder for high - mid 2nd rounder. I think if we're talking in draft pick value, that'd be the cost of moving up in the draft. But in this case, you also have to factor in salary and NYR's situation needing to clear cap space for 2 solid young players.

He shot a high percentage and is arguably on his most skilled team. I think it’s not out of reach considering he had 19 goals last year on a bottom place NYR team.

I don’t mind the pick swap but we don’t have our 2020 2nd due to the Adam Fox Acquisition

you're kinda making my point here..He shot extremely high percentage and banking on a repeat season is just foolish. If I'm to bet, he'd be a 8-9% player which means a dip in production this coming year.

We’ll woudl you consider the revamped NYR roster and possible line mates he could play with that either stabilize his performance or keep longevity in some way?

Honestly, if NYR had the cap space they should keep Strome because I think he'll be a great 3C or even spot 2nd line RW minutes. But because you need the cap to sign DeAngelo and Lemieux, Strome and his 3M contract is the easiest to move unless you prefer buyouts (i don't like buyouts).

Looking how all our bad contracts end in 2021 makes a buyout even HARDER. I think we can move Namestnikov, Fast, Strome, Kreider, which could save $13M+

Haven't Edmonton suffered enough with Strome ?

Also if Toronto didn't want Ceci they could have let him go to arbitration, after the Clarkson Toronto doesn't need the cap space.

I didn't mind the 34 points he put up his first year. That's what I was expecting from him at that point anyways. I think the Oilers pulled the plug on him pretty quick in the 2nd year though and was evident when he exploded for his career average with NYR. His SP% was high but if I'm a betting person, I'd say his ceiling is around 40 points at this point and that's not bad. I'd take him as my 3C anyday.

What's the cap crunch that's forcing the Rangers to do any of this? Trade Strome, Trade Namestnikov, both for mid-late round picks and suddenly that 7 mil in gained cap pays for Deangelo and Lemieux (3.5 mil total combined). There's literally no stress in this situation.

From a quick glance, DeAngelo gets the Pionk contract at the very least (3M). Lemieux probably gets around 1.5M so that's 4.5M you need. NYR is already 4.2M over the cap without those guys signed. So you really need to clear out around 9M in cap without even factoring in the 2 replacement level 700k guys. Maybe you guys buyout Shattenkirk/Staal/Smith on top of trading Namestnikov/Strome and that's how you get cap compliant. If that's not a cap crunch, IDK what is.

I appreciate the quick glance. Now here's the long methodical analysis:
