They have Neuvirth on a PTO, that might be a factor i guess.
I'm sure the Leafs didn't want to give up a skater and liked they young goalies they have.
(not a Leafs fan but throwing in my opinion anyway)
Yes we have a log jam. I would have liked to give sparks another shot, but we need to find starting time for both of Scott and Woll (one on Marlies and Growlers) as well as house Kaskisuo, Hutch, Neuvirth (can be released), and formerly Sparks.
This means that the backup option will be between Hutch and Neuvirth for the Leafs.
Marlies will be one of the prospects and the loser of the NHL battle assuming Neuvirth is actually decent and not released).
Growlers will be the other prospect and Kasisuo.
Boy, is this a smart move.
Leafs are hedging bets for a Marner holdout, which this trade will allow the Leafs to do without caving to Marner. It is complicated but read this thread. It makes everything make sense. This trade is nothing sort of a masterstroke and a huge W by the Leafs https://twitter.com/EarlSchwartz27/status/1153799226175848454
Quoting: Hedman77
I need a leafs fan to explain to me why they traded Sparks

So Clarkson goes on litr i don't think sparks is a salary saving thing by toronto because he just going to be replaced by hutchinson so there is no lose of salary so i don't really get that from toronto but good on vegas for getting rid of him very easily so the real trade is basically sparks for a 4th value wise i think vegas gets the better of it considering deslaurier got a 4th and sparks>deslaurier but honestly vegas has subban already and is better so sparks might start the year in the ahl again but clearly sparks doesn't want that bc of last year does sparks have waivers? if he doesn't then vegas could lose him for nothing

Yeah I've read it. Earl has a good understanding of cap numbers considering none of the rules are really public domain.
Makes sense. Sparks is a contract dump, and the Leafs will be going over the cap with LTIR anyways, so it doesn’t affect their cap one way or the other.
Less money for Marner ? Not sure what u mean? The Leafs save 750000$ in cap space as Clarkson will be placed on LTIR. Therefore they actually have more money to sign Marner
The leafs dont save 750k. Only if Sparks was going to be on their 23 man roster. Players on 1 way deals getting paid under 1M dont count against the cap when they're playing in the minors.
So apparently full ltir relief only happens when a team is at a certain distance from the cap or something. So the leafs couldn't get the Horton salary full relief on ltir without marner signed but also didn't have enough to sign marner without the relief...now they add clarkson which puts them close enough to the cap to get full relief on both come start of the season with a bit of extra call ups/send downs or something like that.
Idea: how about the nhl makes less complicated rules?
Fair. Surprised Clarkston wavied his nmc with the taxes in Toronto
Sure, but other things probably factor in as well.
If he's back living in Canada his salary is still paid in US dollars. At a 1.3:1 (current) exchange rate that's got to (at least start to) help offset the tax difference.
Also if his back is well and truly effed he gets access to the Leafs medical staff and facilities. It's not cash in hand but if it improves quality of life it's not nothing.
This is too funny, Leaves payed a 1st to get rid of Marleau and only get a 4th for this! Now they are extremely vulnerable to an offer sheet before the season, that would force them to make major changes!
Lmfaooooooooooo @ everyone who's here like "why would the Leafs do this?" read the CBA buddy, this makes all sorts of sense. They literally have the guy who wrote the CBA as an AGM.
He doesn't need to live in Toronto since he's on LTIR
just because he doesnt live there doesnt mean he doesnt get taxed for being paid there. you get taxed where you earn the money. which is now toronto again.

This is incorrect, his tax jurisdiction is based on his place of residence.
