Side note, I think the trade is undervalued. If we could pry jones from the Jackets it would be a 1 for 1 with marner. I believe that is a bit of an overpay by the leafs but RHD do carry more trade value than wingers and the jackets would probably need a bigger overpay to consider it.

And who are all the RHD you would prefer over Jones???

Contracts and age aside... burns, Trouba, Carlson, Letang and Petro come to mind.

Contract and age included... Mcavoy, Parayko, Klingberg and Pesce. (Pesce is based solely on team needs, I think jones is better than him but pesce is signed longer cheaper and is great defensively)

This is just off the top of my head. Would love to have jones but if you think you are getting Rielly marner and some firsts for jones all I can do is laugh.

That being said, trophies don’t take into account trade value and guys like Jones and Klingberg aren’t going anywhere because of the value they bring to their team for what they cost. If Columbus ever trades Jones, it’ll be in the last year of his deal if he wants too much to stay.

Points, play... Stanley Cup rings? What justification are you looking for? I like Letang. Think he has been solid for years and competes as much as anyone in the league. If you don’t like Letang that’s fine.

I happen to think Letang is very good actually. Jones on the other hand is a much better player regardless of age and contract. It’s generally accepted that Jones is the 5/6 ranked defender in the entire league. Letang sits between 15 and 20. Do some research yourself and see what the experts think. You may be surprised

The point remains there are a number of other options I would rather have. When it comes to discussion, you're always going to be biased towards your own team. I think people rave about Jones as a top tier dman more or less because of his contract. In three years when he signs for 9-10M he's going to be considered overpaid and CBJ fans are going to dread it.

I think you make a really important point. And for anyone who has spent anytime in a locker room it won't be lost on them. The value that a player brings to their team and organization, which is measured in many different ways, is much different than trade value. It's not even specific to hockey really when it comes to trading. I'm pretty sure everyone has something that money couldn't buy from them.

That’s fine. You like jones and you can’t argue opinion. When you start throwing in names of top level defenders at some point you can only go on personal preference.

This has sparked some great conversation! Marner for Jones 1 for 1 (approx.) would be reasonably fair. I think Jones is one of the best Defencemen in the league, just as Marner is one of the best wingers in the league, and probably the best passer in the league.

I think you're right. If a trade like this ever went down, it would probably be close to 1 for 1. Marner might have an edge on Jones in terms of talent/impact (and that could be debated forever), but Jones' contract kills that advantage considering what it might take to sign Marner.
