Trade value wise, this was a great trade for Philly. German gave North America 1 1/2 of trying and then ran back to Russia. Brutal

Trade value wise, in terms of those draft picks. All the picks busted, but the pick value was good for Philly

I'm not one to defend the Stanimal, but the human brain doesn't reach full maturity until like age 25. There is a chance that he starts playing solid, smart hockey from now on. Pair this with the fact that he's actually been decent and usable in his limited number of games this year, and he might just have a decently long career in the NHL. Definitely not a great pick in retrospect, but on draft day he was the best guy available in the 18-22nd overall range (ignore Tage Thompson), and the Jets made the right call moving up to get him.

This wouldn't be a reality many Jets fans want to live in, but Stanley could conceivably play ~300 NHL games for Winnipeg in his career.

According to Zipf's law, Philly's combined picks were worth a 13.65 overall pick, while what Winnipeg got was worth 14.65. Close, but Philly did a little better. Only Logan Stanley has a chance of playing another NHL game, but even then, he's likely going to sign for league min 1-year contract hoping to prove he can play and stay healthy.

It would have been worth it for Philly if Kyrou fell to them or they drafted Debrincat.

When judging a trade like this, you have to look at the earliest pick, because that was the only known quantity at the time. Winnipeg wanted Stanley badly enough to trade up to make sure they got him. Nobody who was available at that time stood out on Philadelphia’s list. They may have had a handful of players they considered pretty much equal, so they figured they could do just as well by waiting. Who was right? Probably Winnipeg, because Stanley has turned out to be better than the players picked #19-22, but if Philadelphia wasn’t going to pick Stanley anyway, I don’t think it hurt them much to miss out on the next three players drafted, Kieffer Bellows, Dennis Cholowski and Julien Gauthier. It looks like Tage Thompson was the guy they should have picked, but he didn’t go until #26, so they likely would have made that mistake with or without this trade.
