Probably would never happen but Slavin

Description
It's a long shot as they have Jordan Staal, but he is getting up in age and they can get another top defensive centerman (
Danault) who is 5 years younger and trade Staal for another few pieces. On top of Danault, they would get two blue chip prospects and a 2nd round pick (maybe upgrade to a first to push it through). Slavin is a very good (underrated) two way defenseman with a 54.7 Corsi percentage, 53.9 shots percentage, 54.7 scoring chances percentage and 54.3 high-danger chances percentage at five-a-side. He managed those marks despite having the lowest offensive zone start percentage, 53 percent, of any Hurricanes defenseman.

It's subjective. Slavin is definitely underrated and what he does on the ice is not represented by his points. Carolina doesn't really have anyone to replace Slavin's minutes unless they think Fleury and Bean are ready, but Habs fans will think this is an overpay because they understand that Romanov and Caufield are some of Mtl's top prospects and will be part of the core moving forward. Carolina fans probably don't know who those players are yet and so they see this as a trade for Danault and "throwaway pieces".

Not only are Caufield and Romanov both great prospects, we are also giving up one of the best defensive centers in the league (very good 5v5 scorer) and a 2nd round pick. This trade is definitely a massive overpayment

Like I said, to us Habs fans this is an overpayment, but look at the Carolina fans reaction above. Carolina needs an incentive to part with their top Dman (because they don't want to give him up) and Slavin is a player that would put Montreal over the top I think. I think Poehling can develop quicker into what Danault is already, maybe one to 2 seasons away.

Carolina fans say that the leafs would need to give up Matthews for Slavin so we know how reasonable they can be around him...

Look, Habs fans have biases towards their players and Canes fans have biases towards theirs. I'm pretty sure that I have exaggerated the trade in the Canes favor, but that's what it would take to pry a Defenceman that we need from a team that doesn't want to part ways with.

The only trade for Matthews that should ever be declined is Matthews for McDavid. If the leafs were going to trade him for a defensman, it sure as hell wouldnt be Slavin...

The truth is, yes Slavin is a very good d-man but he will never be worth that much. Look at what Ottawa got for Karlsson! Danault and a pick would be far more reasonnable. I know Slavin very well and, basically what you are offering for him is Danault, 2x2nd picks and a 1st pick, this is WAY too much. Plus this trade would not make sense for Carolina since they already have plenty of good prospects (they won the Calder cup) they do not need prospects.

Maybe most habs fans, or hockey fans, are biased towards their own players but i can see it subjectively and know that this is way too much. Caufield is a very well known prospect and Romanov was one of the best d-men at the world juniors. this is not Evans and Olofsson you are offering, they are no scrap pieces.
