So Hoffman has outscored Saad for 4 years in a row and somehow, the Hawks get the better pick back. So what they say is true, only Leaf fans overvalue their own players. Lol

Well its an expiring contract in Hoffman and Q gets Saad for a few more years.

If you think you can get Hoffman to resign for under 6 AAV sure but lets be realistic he is going to want much more... and they need that space to fill out the roster.

Who knows, Hoffman if he hits the open market will get WAY MORE than he's worth, personally I wouldn't give him more than 3.5 million. Which seems absurd for a guy who just scored 70 points but really, he's playing with Barkov who is a elite talent and that is where most of the points come from. There are very few players, I'd give 4 million dollars or more to and Hoffman isn't one of them, especially at the age of 29. It'll take a few more years I think but very soon we'll see 29 year olds being forced to accept short term deals. If they are support guys, they will be getting way less money.

Watch Tyson Barrie go FA next year and get a 7 year deal that pays over 7 million and then be Shattenkirk in 2-3 years. Playing into your mid 30's is becoming such a rarity and yet still 29 year olds get big contracts every year.

Not sure I follow your point... I think we are both in agreement that Hoffman gets an AAV prob north of 8 per after this season. My point being is that I don't think that Florida will sign that contract but what I am saying is with Saad they have 2 years of cost control and a player Q knows very well who can play a top 6 role, PP and PK. The trade I proposed is within a reasonable doubt.

8 million or more for a guy that is 30 is just stupid. GM's are so dumb, and owners are often worse.

Here is the point I am trying to make its not really at all to do with the proposed trade. I am hijacking the thread, sorry for that.

Hoffman had a career year last season at the age of 29 and turns 30 next season. He's going to be looking for a big contract that will reward him for those numbers. Some GM (A guy like Benning in Vacouver) will go over the top to sign him and give him 6-7 years and 8 million. What will happen after that? He may have 1 or 2 years where he plays close to how he has the past 2 seasons and then start declining. The problem is he won't be worth 8 million in year 1 let a lone year 3-4. This happens so often and I can't for the life of me understand why GM's keep doing this. Look at Myers in Vancouver. How does he get paid more than every defenceman in TO? He's literally never been as good as he was in his rookie season and is coming off a bad season. Still gets a huge contract. Jordan Eberle has had some flashes of being a good player but never much more than a depth guy who can play with stars sometimes and disappears in the playoffs (Round 1 of last year not withstanding) and gets term as he enters his 30's. This happens despite watching what is currently happening to guys like Laad, Backes, Perry, Kopitar, etc. There are very few players who seem to keep going after the start declining and none of them were depth guys, they were superstars like Thorton and Burns.

Never give term to anyone that is FA in their late 20's, if I was a GM I'd have a term limit of 4 years for 28 year olds, (Unless they are superstars, then I would offer a max term but it would be front loaded and the cap hit would be vastly reduced.) If you are 30, I'd give 2 year terms. Why assume the risk that any player is going to somehow not decline when almost all of them do.
