He must be betting on himself to make a fatter contract after next year. I hope he gets there

Can't really go wrong with a one year deal. Leivo betting on himself.

Great signing. A cheaper but shorter than expected 'Show Me' contract. Did a lot better on Vancouver than with Toronto.

Ugh can't believe we let him go. He's better than the player we got in return, even though it's too early to judge and just my opinion.
Excellent, cheap contract. Give him a decent passing centre and fair opportunity and he'll score 15 easily.

Cause Leivo probably doesn't want to stay long term

If he was still on Toronto he'd be sitting up in the press box watching the games, rather than playing.

I'm sure a longer term would have been nicer but this seems better for Canucks this year even if he walks next smile.

This can't be a "show me" contract ... he's a UFA next summer ... it's more like a "show everyone so you can price yourself out of Vancouver" contract.

I feel like Vancouver should be getting 2-3 years of term for a $1,500,000 cap-hit:

- He's 26 and this deal sends him straight to UFA next year.
- He's spent 6 seasons bouncing between the NHL and AHL.
- His career high's through 6 years = 24 PTS and 13:48 TOI.
- He was an RFA and wouldn't get this much in arbitration.

The only logical reason to give him over a million would be to lock him up for 2+ years ... it probably sounds like I'm trashing him but:

- TONS of UFA's signed for under $1,000,000 last week.
- LOTS of them had more points than Leivo last year.
- LOTS of them have a better defensive game than him.

Random Examples:

$700,000 = JASON SPEZZA / C
$700,000 = KEN AGOSTINO / LW
$725,000 = BRIAN GIBBONS / C
$750,000 = NICK SHORE / C
$775,000 = BRANDON PIRRI / LW
$800,000 = TYLER ENNIS / LW
$1,000,000 = BRETT RITCHIE / RW
$1,000,000 = NICK COUSINS / C

Leivo hasn't played in the AHL since 3 seasons ago, he was just ignored by TO and scratched all the time

Spezza is 10 years older than him and could fall apart at the drop of a hat. Despite that, he likely only took the league min contract because he wants to be in TO. He may have been offered more and took a discount. He's made his money, he doesn't need to worry about that. Money is still important for Leivo

Agostino actually DID play in the AHL last year. In the NHL he had 6 goals (23 points) and Leivo had 14 goals (24 points). Goals are more expensive than assists, and Leivo shows potential to be a 20 goal scorer, Agostino does not

Gibbons is about the same as Agostino

Shore didn't play in the NHL last year, he was in the KHL

Pirri and Ennis I think are good contracts, and either could have been a bit more. Still, players get paid less when they were in the minors for part of the PY (Pirri). I was surprised Ennis didn't command a bit more, but maybe its because all of minutes last year were 4th line mins

Cousins is a slightly better contract than the Agostino and Gibbons contracts but he's not a goal scorer either

OK fair enough ...

You can definitely analyze every "random" player and contract I mentioned ... but I only spent 20 seconds looking looking and this won't change my overall point.

Some guys getting $700,000 have less points, goals, etc ... some have more ... some are Centers ... some are better defenders and penalty killers than Leivo.

My only real disagreement is with your comments about age:

- Signing age means a LOT if we're discussing multi-year contracts.
- But it means VERY LITTLE if we're discussing 1-year contracts.
- And it means EVEN LESS if we're discussing low-cap contracts.

So you admit your examples are poor yet your 'point' stands? This speaks to someone's credibility.

That seems fair but Kings had to pay over 2M a season for Iaffalo while Sharks got a probably better player for much cheaper on a single year deal smile...
