Great signing. A cheaper but shorter than expected 'Show Me' contract. Did a lot better on Vancouver than with Toronto.
This can't be a
"show me" contract ... he's a UFA next summer ... it's more like a
"show everyone so you can price yourself out of Vancouver" contract.

Good for Leivo. He deserves a nice raise

He must be betting on himself to make a fatter contract after next year. I hope he gets there

Can't really go wrong with a one year deal. Leivo betting on himself.

I agree he was decent in Vancouver and must believe he can do better

Cause Leivo probably doesn't want to stay long term

I'm sure a longer term would have been nicer but this seems better for Canucks this year even if he walks next
.
I feel like Vancouver should be getting 2-3 years of term for a $1,500,000 cap-hit:
- He's 26 and this deal sends him straight to UFA next year.
- He's spent 6 seasons bouncing between the NHL and AHL.
- His career high's through 6 years = 24 PTS and 13:48 TOI.
- He was an RFA and wouldn't get this much in arbitration.
The only logical reason to give him over a million would be to lock him up for 2+ years ... it probably sounds like I'm trashing him but:
-
TONS of UFA's signed for under $1,000,000 last week.
-
LOTS of them had more points than Leivo last year.
-
LOTS of them have a better defensive game than him.
Random Examples:
$700,000 = JASON SPEZZA / C
$700,000 = KEN AGOSTINO / LW
$725,000 = BRIAN GIBBONS / C
$750,000 = NICK SHORE / C
$775,000 = BRANDON PIRRI / LW
$800,000 = TYLER ENNIS / LW
$1,000,000 = BRETT RITCHIE / RW
$1,000,000 = NICK COUSINS / C
