Not necessarily. If they get an injury or 2 that would make their cap hit higher than it is on their team. Also if they get someone at the trade deadline. But the main thing is the bonuses Kotkaniemi & Poehling (& potentially Suzuki later on) might get, causing our cap hit to be higher than expected. So I traded Weiss to give us the $2.3 million cushion, which I’m not sure if it is enough.

yes they can make a trade, CAR can choose not to match and then MTL trade say...drouin and suzuki to CAr for like MTLs 3rd....thus making it basically Drouin, Suzuki MTL 1st and 2nd in 2020 for Aho....(players used in the example are used only as example, no one knows what would go back to CAR in such trade scenario)

I think in terms of AAV and value it's obvious for Carolina to match it. Not so much an easy decision for Tom Dundon's wallet.
