This was an Aho using Bergervin and the Habs, Carolina matches just in 7 days. Habs lose out on any Defenceman that could actually pair with Weber and don't get Aho all at the same time. This was a terrible and weak offer from the Habs

If Dundon doesn’t match this, he may as well sell the team now.

I think Carolina must have really make a ridiculous low offer to Aho. That offer of 8.5m per year to me seems so low. Betcha Aho is peeved in thinking that was the best offer from any team. Good for the Habs for making it. Aho and Marner have had almost identical stats the past two seasons. Is they the going rate? Leafs are happy? Avs are happy (Rantanen). Tampa is happy (Point). And how to do Laine and Connor of Jets fall in line.

Why? Almost 20 million in cap space seems like more than enough for a contract costing 8.454M

It proves that he doesn’t give a **** about anyone other than his organization, and for his team to win. Which I think is pretty great.

it's not about capspace, it's about real money. Carolina barely made 23M from tickets sales, wich is 3M less than the year befor... Dundon is also in a 70M lawsuit right now.. the habs took adventage of a weakened owner

Tha cap hit is not the issue here. It's the signing bonuses in the first 12 months, 21 million dollars. Habs has the money but for Canes it has to come from Dundon's pockets.

Not sure why people are picking sides on this. This isnt going to prevent Berg from signing anyone and theres no reason to believe that. if habs somehow signed 2 guys and got to the cap ceiling (idk gardiner and wouldve been lee possibly), why would the canes want to drop the 8.5 on them? While it would be funny seeing a team scathe their way out of that, im sure the canes would much rather keep their player. Whether they can match all the up front bonuses is another issue, but berg did this to get other gm's comfortable with seeing what happens and doing it as well (i.e. point marner connor). these young & talented RFA's are gonna have more power and cause cap tight teams to struggle and they are going to get PAID. He's literally just testing the waters with a modest 8.5 and I think he'd be shocked himself if they actually got him. all he's doing is stirring the pot for others and future RFA's.

Poor Aho gets offered 6x6M by the canes. Atleast now, he either go play in the big market or has to stay only 5more years in Carolina.

To me, those quotes sums up the situation.

ERIC DUHATSCHEK, The Athletic :

"Carolina’s not going to love the term because five years walks Aho right into unrestricted free agency. Moreover, Dundon’s pocketbook is going to be lightened to the tune of over $20 million within the calendar year, which is going to sting in the short term. But the draft choice compensation is so limited at the salary threshold where Aho signed – just a first-, a second- and a third-round pick going Carolina’s way if they fail to match – that the Hurricanes cannot possibly walk away from someone who is their best player and only going to get better."

SCOTT BURNSIDE, The Athletic :

"Worse for the Habs, it takes them out of tendering another offer sheet for a similar tier player (one that might actually work) and likely severely limits their ability to add other free agents in the interim on the off chance that the Canes walk away from their young star. As for other NHL GMs somehow taking their cues from the Bergevin gambit, all this would seem to reinforce is that, unless you are really and truly all-in, you’d be better served lighting the coals and getting down to some serious barbecuing before Canada Day wastes away."

It now remains a question of Dundon’s pocketbook. His decision might be made, but he'll take the full 7 days to surely match the offer. It means that Bergevin can't do any moves before those 7 days : he'll miss opportunities.

tl;dr : bad move unless Bergevin wasn't planning anything

I just want to comment and I'm not specifically replying to anyone. I'm not a fan of the Habs but this has clearly been an "eat a d*ck" moment brought to you by Marc Bergevin. F***KING HILARIOUS. I don't think Bergevin had anything else planned. He's not the best GM but him and his team likely went through all of the scenarios and laid things out pretty well. I think something must have happened today between both of these teams with regards to acquiring free agents or whatever. Habs knew full well that Carolina is likely to take the 7 days. They knew the right to match compensation they'd be giving up wouldn't break the prospect futures. They knew that this would handcuff them on other moves because they were likely not going to make any other RFA offer sheet moves. They knew that this was the best possible chance at an RFA regardless of whether they want/get him or not. All the other teams like Tampa, Winnipeg, Calgary etc will match in an instant and get rid of whomever they need to to make things work. Winnipeg and Tampa would have been in a spot but an offer sheet for their stars would have cost more in cap/real value and there would have been more on the line in terms of picks to compensate. Hats off to you Marc Bergevin for being D**k of the day and probably the month, and maybe even the whole summer.

The Canadiens still have over 4 mil after he would accept plus 10% in buffer room in the summer to adjust the cap hit before oct 6 (i believe) That is nore than enough room to sign a player or 2. Carolina can match the cap hit. But cannot match the signing bonus. The gm for montreal does have morals. This is a business and if theres an opportunity to get someone of that caliber. Then there is simply no wrong doing in it. Where would you think Aho rather be? With a bunch of people that dont have established names yet? or a team that has WELL established players and a bunch of fin's that will back him up and go play with in the national teams. Great offer Montreal, I hope we get him. Now sign a defenseman ?

This was a horrible offer sheet from the Habs. The main concern for the Habs was the length. They wanted longer than 5 years. They will match the money no problem and the deal is done.
This contract will have no effect on Marner or Point. Neither one care what Aho got. His negotiation is not theirs.

LOL I think you are mad because you worry marner will be next. This is the way the system is suppose to work. Besides the NHL loves drama. What a great way to create bad blood.

Awesome contract for whichever team ends up with the player. IMO Aho is better than Marner, for $8.5M over 5 years this will be a steal. We'll be talking about this contract in 3 years the way we talk about Bergeron, Scheifele and MacKinnon today.
