I get the point you are trying to make, but the resulting team is not convincing. In fact, it helps the opposite argument. That roster is still close the cap, the right side of the D still suspicious. You signed Marner at 9M (probably a fair number), and there would be no fuss right now if he signed such a contract. Tavares' 88 points and 47 goals, in addition to his role against opponents' top lines, are worth something. The question is would you take JVR and Bozak back for 12M, instead of him at 11M? I don't think I would.

Also, your lineup includes Max Domi. Montreal got him for Galchenyuk. What piece would the Leafs have given to get him? I'd gladly add him to our current lineup if he's available.

Big contracts are always tough to swallow but if Tavares helps get TOR a cup in the next few years then I would say it's worth it. This is how I feel about the Karlsson signing as a Sharks fan. You got to pay for elite players. If Dubas didn't do it, someone else would have.

That marner contract should be 7.5m x 8yrs because without TAvares marner puts up 70 points.

They never would have signed bozak to 5 mil a season. Without JT Mathews signs for 10.5 Nylander signs for 6 and Marner would be signing for 6 to 7. JRV would have been good for 7 on the leafs. Still would have had a 1st in this rounds draft and next years pick too. Signing JT didn't put them any closer to winning the cup. It was a step backwards.

Just like marner. A very dynamic pair that Dubas sold JT on and boy was he right. Both had career seasons. How is that a bad thing?
