Marner has reportedly turned down $11M x 8yrs so I don't think he'd be taking $10M for 8yrs

Absolutely the Leafs would do this deal. Would the Canes? They might insist on Bracco instead of the 2nd. Also, I can tell you from watching the Marlies last season, neither Brooks nor Liljegren is ready to start with the big club. Also, I feel like $1.5 million offers would do it for both Ron Hainsey (a better choice over Dan Girardi) and Perry. If the Leafs had an extra money, I would hope they'd take a run at Collin Miller in Vegas, or try to sign Anton Stralman to a short-term contract. Remember, Dermott won't be back to start the season as he is still recovering from his surgery.

Agree on these points. Personally, I'd pass on resigning Hainsey unless absolutely necessary. How much do you figure Stralman would make on the open market, especially given his age and injury history?

Eklund is "reporting" that on Hockey Buzz - right?
nobody besides Marner, his agent and Dubas know what's been offered...so what you are offering is a rumour, nothing more

Pesce is the absolute most overrated player in hockey. He's good but good players are worth a young potential star forward, a top 4 defenseman and a defenseman. The Leafs apparently mulled over a deal that was Brown and Kapanen for Pesce and Carolina considered it. Nylander is alone worth significantly more than Kap and Brown. This trade is trash and pretty much every trade involving Carolina is trash on here. Premium price for secondary players. Let Benning make crap moves like that.

absolutely not, Pesce for Nylander straight up is a stretch, the rest of that trade is pure fantasy league
Pesce MIGHT be a number two D, but then who knows?
last time I saw the Canes play Slavin and Hamilton were the top pair, so Pesce routinely did not face top competition
how's he worth so much in a trade then?
and don't tell me it's Zaitsev's money, because the difference between him and Pesce is $400k

Why is Brett Pesce worth so much more than Jacob Trouba, who is a more well-rounded player? I know that Trouba's value was decreased because he only wanted to go to a limited number of American teams (apparently none of which were in SoCal) and he's on an expiring contract, but even Nylander plus a second is like Larsson for Hall and a second.

Canes just dealt de Haan, to make room for Bean or Fleury without a doubt, but I don't see them wanting to move Pesce after they've just moved a top 4 dman so they say no.

Because the leafs are involved. One thing you will notice is that when the Leafs (media and fan based) are involved value is way over hyped

If you look at posts from a few months ago

Marleau wants to play for a winner will not wave his no trade etc .
Kapanen and Johnsson were both $5M players but are now were they should be at under $3.5M.
Zaitsev is the worst player in the NHL and no team will take him He will end up being moved without a sweetener
Marner is $12M guy smile but will end up under $10M.

and so on and so on

Marner will probably end up signing a 6 year deal, just under $10M (hopefully), maybe up to around $10.16M. I think if the Leafs look at moving Nylander for a dman, they'll look at a more elite option such as Spurgeon or Letang. Also, looks like Kap and Johnsson will be re-signing for 3 and 4 years plus Bracco on an ELC fits the Leafs roster better than a slow and aging Perry at $2.5M. I think if the Leafs look at Pesce that they'd move Kap rather than Willy.

De Haan is not a legitimate top-4. He might be paid like one but don't let that fool you.

I am not sure how you would even calculate UFA "inflation" but at fair market value, maybe $3-3.5 million AAV over 2-3 years.
