How about we don't use the best winger we have not named Kucherov as a cap dump so that we can take on expensive contracts that don't benefit us?
To clarify, I like the idea of signing Pavelski if he agrees (though I think it's unlikely). It has to be for a one-year deal though; the cap doesn't work otherwise without making a ton of stupid moves and icing an AHL-tier bottom six.
But we have Cal Foote and Dominik Masin potentially ready to see NHL time, and six more than capable defensemen if they're not quite ready (Hedman-Sergachev, McDonagh-Cernak, Coburn-Rutta is an extremely solid defensive core). Not to mention that we could probably re-sign Stralman or Girardi at the price we're paying for TJ Brodie, a defenseman who seriously struggled this season except when placed with Giordano (the Norris winner) and has thus earned himself a position on the trading block.
Don't make any trades that involve taking on cap (we don't need another defenseman), keep Gourde (our best forechecking forward and most consistent scoring winner other than Kucherov whose advanced stats reveal him to be playing a major role in the Lightning's success), and then save cap by moving someone like Killorn at the end of the season. Montreal probably rejects this anyway.
