Description
EDIT: PER SUGGESTIONS, I REMOVED SOME OF THE PICKS IN THE MARNER-LAINE TRADE

Marner is amazing but ultimately too expensive when considering that the leafs need to extend Muzzin, Dermott, Reilly, Andersson, Liljegren, Sandin, Kadri, in the next 1-4yrs. The mindset of the lines is such:

Top 6:
Each line is molded around an $11M centerman, and elite $6-8M winger, and a grinder type puck-fetcher between $2-3M. Paying more than this makes signing defense and goaltending too hard.

3rd line:
Kadri is super valuable because he makes the 3rd line threatening while also being a good replacement in the top6 if/when Tavares or Matthews are hurt. I think the two talented wingers with his third line could do some damage

4th line:
Whatever its fine

Top 4 Defense:
Reilly, Muzzin, Larsson are known top4, and we hope that Dermott can do it too. Hainsy is extended 1 year in case we need him.

The bottom two pair D need to be inexpensive. We could do old guys who cost little, or hope that our top 2 prospects are ready to make the jump. Feel free to picture them replaced by Holl, Rosen, or random free agents costing < or = $1M

That only happens(and not two 1st rounders) if he signs for under 10M.

Jets decline, Marner's contract will be more expensive and the Jets aren't giving up 2 firsts to give themselves more cap hell.

From the sound of things he is asking for way more than 10M. Maybe due to the cost difference they could mix the picks up or something. I tried my best to find out what people think Laine will accept but the internet is super torn on his value right now. I cap the winger at $8M, if Laine wants more than that I don't think we can afford him, OR Marner

I see the thought process but the problem with Laine/Marner deal (aside from value) is that whomever is lining up next to JT91/AM34 needs to be a playmaker as the 2 centrmen are both snipers.

I suppose I'm assuming Marner is better than Laine by too much. What changes to the picks do you think would make it work (if at all)?

Retain some $$ on Zaitsev (maybe $1.5-1.8 million)

Make it one pick each on Laine/Marner (so Marner/2nd for Laine/1st). Plus add a conditional 3rd or so (going either way) to protect against offer sheet.

Edmonton would definitely not want to take all of zaitsev's contract. Got enough bad contracts on the books as is

Tavares and Matthews are both talented goal scorers but their point production has been about a 50-50 split between goals and assists. Matthews specifically said he wanted his assists to go up too

I think the logic is flawed when you say the Leafs HAVE to trade Marner now because of the extension of Leafs in the future. Certainly Muzzin doesn't have to be extended and who know how good/what cap will be for Liljegren and others.
Having too many good players isn't bad. You can always trade someone for assets.

The Gaborik trade works if. Ottawa is paying out of pocket for at least some of LTIR. Leafs would still have to add a sweetener. Oilers might like that trade but you have to like Zaitsev for 5 years. Maybe just forget Puji and have Bracco, Korshov or Marchand on wing.

I kind of just assume Ken Holland would be ok with him but you might be right. I'd be willing to sweeten that deal with more from the Leafs if it would make them accept Z

What I mean is less about Marner, and more about salary in general. I don't think it works to have that much cash tied up in the top 6. You're right that they don't need to keep Muzzin, but the reality is that they need to pay their top4 defense. So if it isn't Muzzin, it will have to be some other Top4 D in the league who would want at least $4M+. Reilly is a big one, he might double his salary. Dermott is at least going up to $3M if he plays out this year as a top4 D

You're definitely right about Lijegren and Sandin, but I assume that they will at the very least cost more than their ELCs

If oilers move out russel, then a deal could be done. If he isn't moved there is zero chance of it happening. Either way Zaitsev at 4.5M till he's 32 with a NTC is a rough contract to take in so it would have to be retained to a value that is more manageable.

The cap difference is the real kicker. Maybe the option to swap 1st round picks instead of dropping a full round?

Even if this was 1 for 1 and the cap wasn't an issue, this is a hard trade to make.
PL is a 40 goal scorer. He's got two seasons in the 30s. He's gonna keep racking up goals in his career.
Marner has never even cracked 30.
I don't think the Jets do this. Marner brings other things to the table in his play and he's a good player, but putting the puck in the net is always something teams are looking for.

Do you think the Jets would do a 1-for-1? I'm not suggesting it, but just wondering what their perspective of these two players is over in Winnipeg

I don't know. Like I said that's a hard choice. They are two very different kind of players. One is a play maker one is a really good young goal scorer. That was not PL last 40 goal season by a long shot. He's going to be a guy regularly around that mark. It's hard to find guys who can do that.

the rumored asking price for a team to take Marleau is Kapanen going with him, like the bickel trade the hawks did a few years back, it is why marleau is currently still a leaf.

Leafs are either going to have to pony up to get rid of Marleau contract or lose Marner.

This roster doesn't have Marner on it. But ya if Marleau cant be traded they would end up losing Johnsson and Hainsy from this roster. Johnssons rights could be traded for something and maybe Hainsy would sign for less
