You keep saying 5 years is a no go, but keep in mind Matthews just signed a 5 year deal after his ELC. It's not out of the realm of possibility. Granted, Sweeney is a better GM than Dubas so it's not likely but still McAvoy might say it's 5 or nothing.

McAvoy is a group 1 rfa. 4 years and he’s still an rfa. No player in the cap era has ever signed a deal off their elc bringing them to ufa without buying out any ufa years. So yes, it is out of the realm of possibility

I just said Sweeney won't sign him to a 5 year contract. because he's smarter than that. But Matthews just signed a 5 year deal which didn't buy out any UFA years ans expires his first eligible UFA year. It is possible, just not likely
