I def. agree w/ you that the Leafs need to play hardball w/ Marner. No team will offer up four 1st rounders AND $11-12M AAV for him. Remember, he's only averaged 23.3G per season. He's not a Center and Draisaitl signed for $8.5M (probably $9.5 adjusted for cap inflation). Draisaitl is also superior goal scorer. If Dubas has to play hardball, he should. He needs to avoid another overpay. An extra $2M in cap space could be the difference in winning the Cup or continuously losing in the 1st round.

well how much he should make is not what he will make.

I love how the question reads: "How much will Marner make?" rather than, how much "should" Marner make? I think there's a significant difference. Probably a $2M difference.

state taxes is something the media talks about way more than players care about. it's not a big factor in negotiations. especially if the player wants to play in a specific destination, they don't care about the taxes if they'll enjoy living and playing in the city. Stone wanted to live and play in Vegas, state tax is just a bonus. Florida and Arizona also have no state tax, we don't see big-name free agents going there. also, Canadian players who live in Canada make American dollars. 9.5m USD is the equivalent of 12.667 CAD

With the 11.5 suggestion, the average on what he would make is 10.4 mil,
Without, it is ~10,277,778 AAV

Well it would be if personal tax rates are important, but they really aren't. So basing players after tax income on posted personal tax rates is foolish.
Besides, Marner's yardstick is other players or an offer sheet. No teams is offering Marner 13m, or 12m or probably not 11m...so why should the Leafs.

tax isnt a major factor in negotiations

For some, yes. I don’t think Mark Stone (or Mitch Marner for that matter) cares about how much it looks like they’re getting paid vs. how much they actually get.

Agreed, but wouldn't most star players prefer the $13M? It just helps the ego being the highest paid player in the league.

Stone also took a discount because of Vegas’ favourable taxes.
Which is the equivalent of a $13 million AAV in Toronto.

If it’s 5 years around 11 million. If it’s 8 years probably closer to 12. (If not more)

I strongly believe that Matthews was paid commensurate w/ his abilities. He's a true superstar. As is Tavares. I'd offer Marner $84M ($10.5M AAV) on an 8 year contract. I think it's fair to say that Skinner was overpaid at $9M AAV and Kucherov took a hometown discount in Tampa. Stone is an incredible 2-way Winger and he got $9.5M AAV. Given Marner's offensive numbers, his age, and his playmaking ability I think $10.5M is the perfect number.
