These are the types of contracts that end up drastically setting teams back when they try to be competitive. What happens when the Sabres need to pay guys like Dahlin and some other top forwards that they bring in? Skinner making $9M is going to hurt them bad. I understand why they went to that number so they could make it happen, but damn, that's a lot.

I would say his biggest comparable player in stats would be Cam Atkinson (Cam just dropped 41Gs this year, but only 69 total points).

Cam makes 5.875. Buffalo just signed Skinner for 9.

That's a massive overpay, I'm sorry. Skinner should have gotten 6.5-7, max.

That's Hilarious! Your projections are what YOU would do. The decision makers gave a 40 goal guy 9M. None of those three are worth those contracts. Sheary is barely worth 3M now, but YOU would give him 5?

He's actually a 31 goal guy (per 82 games) if you average his last 5 seasons. He will never score 40 goals again.

And he'll likely be a 15-20 goal guy for the second half of this contract ... and he won't be playing defense at any point.

And yes ... based on this contract ... Buffalo will probably give Sheary $5,000,000 ... and Montour $8,000,000.

He doesn't fit into their gameplan. You have to know how to play defense to fit into their system. I believe they could've got a better player than Drouin for Sergachev, but he's way to one-dimensional

You can teach defense, because he's young.. And the offense will always be there. So under the right coaching team he will be good.

He's been on Tampa for 2 seasons now. I have yet to watch him play where I would say he has enough defensive skills to make it as a full time top 4 NHL defensemen. He's only 20 and still has tons of room to grow, but I haven't seen his defensive game improve since he has started playing in this league.

They had so sign him, it's an overpay by 1 to 1.5 per year so he'd stay in Buffalo. He could have went anywhere but he chose Buffalo. Everyone knows this.

He probably has another team willing to go 8.5 or 9 for 7 years.

If BOTS didn't sign him we'd all be pissed. Imagine how much more pathetic the team would be (if that's possible) without him.

Dont like the no trade.

Overpay: Agree........Necessary: Absolutely.

Good for Skinner to cash in so he can quit his job as principal dealing w/ Bart Simpson but for 9M I don't think so smile...

in the third of season proving, that this contract is one of worst in NHL. They will regret it not after five seasons, but after this first, when he have 40 points max grin. Im LA Kings fan, so i feel bad to crytize any other team, but i hate contracts like that. There are players worth more and getting payed half

Skinner was always one of those guys that you could look at and say if he played with consistency or the same effort every game he would be a top 10 scorer in the league. He just isnt consistent nor does he always bring it.

Hi Bud. You've slowed down your poss recently. I guess you have a life. Sad news is that I have even more time for CapFriendly as my wife has been hospitalized.
Your PPD (Posts per Day) might be unbeatable though.

Hey mate, what's your thoughts right now about Serg? For me from the eyetest: He is better than last year.
He started to play physical hockey. Isn't that a step in the right direction?
He also started to shoot the puck sometimes pretty deadly. I think he learned from Shatty... haha...
He learned from Cernak how to play physical(and hitting a lot more)hockey...
Interesting to see his developement for sure every year... the potential is still there certainly cheers

He's definitely improving in the right direction, and his offensive game has only gotten better. His defensive game is improving, but at 21, I think his offense is only going to carry himself as much as his defense will allow him too.

I think there is one solution - Tampa needs to develop(Cal Foote) or sign(Johsh Manson?) 1 or 2 defensive minded RHD, and then pair him with Serg, so the ther guy takes care the defensive responsibilities most of the time, so he can be more free, and when he needs to come back, uses his speed to get back + his body to hit some guys hard.
Not everyone can be Hedman, who is flying on the ice, doesn't matter what happens... He def played his best hockey last 5-10 games.
Hope he can keep it up, then we'll see what happens in the playoffs.... hopefully we go at least 1 round, then anything can happen in the 2nd round....
Then it's conf finals already... probably we lose there though... but it's ok... maybe we sign some guys before trade deadline, so we have a small chance there... Serg gonna be better for sure in the playoffs this year.... last year he was kinda lost on the ice... like the whole team and he was NOT physical at all.. like we just got pushed around like crazy by guys like Josh Anderson and Boone Jenner, Foligno etc...
It's not gonna happen again with the changes we made since start of the year... i hope we don't trade him and give him a fair deal(like a bridge first, then if he develops what he needs to be, then big contract).

On topic - Latest advanced stats:
Buffalo Sabres 12% to make the playoffs- ouch... - Skinner - not a good contract if i want to say it nicely Confused

I wouldnt be happy if my team paid 9M per year for him. AAV is too high right now but since it's a long term deal it may turn out to be decent value if the cap rises a lot the next few years.

You're not? I guess it depends on your definition of 'cap hell', but from these eyes, the Leafs are certainly in cap hell.

Why are you looking to unload Marleau and Zaitsev? Are they terrible players? No. You just can't afford them anymore.
Can you sign Marner, Kapanen, Johnsson? Are you able to add to the roster? Or just bring up players to fill holes?
You certainly can't add anything of value from outside the organization.

To me, 'cap hell' means you can't add a player (i.e. Panarin, Karlsson) that adds to your team.
The Sabres are certainly not in cap hell. They still have $20 million+ to add to their team.
They could easily afford a Karlsson. Why? Because the Sabres are not in cap hell.
The Leafs are.

IN RETROSPECT WE CAN SEE THAT:

BUFFALO:
- Did not add Karlsson or Panarin with their free cap-space.
- Used that $11,500,000 to acquire Miller + Simmonds + Frolik.
- Gave away 2nd + 4th + 4th + 5th + 5th rounders to acquire them.
- Kept Botterill on as GM (to sign every crucial impending extension).

TORONTO:
- Did sign Marner + Kapanen + Johnsson without any issues.
- Did unload Zaitsev + Marleau as stated (both terrible in 2019-20).
- Added Mikeyev for free (the closest Euro FA to Panarin in decades).
- Added two more of the KHL's best for free (Lehtonen + Barabanov).

TORONTO CURRENTLY:
Has their entire core signed for at least 3 more years:

- 5 Years = Matthews
- 6 Years = Tavares
- 6 Years = Marner
- 5 Years = Nylander
- 5 Years = Muzzin
- 3 Years = Rielly
- 3 Years = Mikheyev
- 3 Years = Kapanen
- 4 Years = Johnsson
- 3 Years = Campbell
- 4 Years = Kerfoot
- 3 Years = Engvall
- 4 Years = Holl

Will have solid roster players on ELC's for at least 3 more years:

- 3 Years = Sandin
- 3 Years = Liljegren
- 4 Years = Robertson

The only question mark is Freddy Andersen's extension after next season.
Campbell looks like an upgrade at a huge discount though ($1,600,000 x 3).
Campbell had a 0.928 SV% over 36 games as LA's starter after Quick got hurt.

BUFFALO CURRENTLY:
Is low on cap-space and must extend most of their core within 14 months.
With Skinner's deal as a comparable, Botterill could easily be forced into paying:

$11,000,000 x 7 = Dahlen
- $9,000,000 x 7 = Reinhart
- $8,000,000 x 7 = Montour
- $7,000,000 x 7 = Olofsson
- $6,000,000 x 6 = Ullmark
- $6,000,000 x 6 = Johanson
- $5,000,000 x 5 = Jokiharju
- $5,000,000 x 5 = McCabe
- $5,000,000 x 5 = Kahun
- $3,000,000 x 3 = Mittelstat
- $3,000,000 x 3 = Larsson
- $3,000,000 x 3 = Vesey
-----------------------
$71,000,000 = Total Cost

Now add that to Botterill's existing long-term contracts:

$10,000,000 x 7 = Eichel
- $9,000,000 x 8 = Skinner
- $6,000,000 x 4 = Okposo
- $5,000,000 x 3 = Risto
- $4,000,000 x 3 = Miller
-----------------------
$34,000,000 = Total Cost

And you get $105,000,000 spent on 16 players (with the cap stuck around $80,000,000 for 2-3 more years).

-----------------------

The end result here is quite obvious - Toronto is currently in a much better cap-situation than Buffalo.
And that's without even considering that Toronto currently has a much better team than Buffalo.

He's not worth this contract but he's been insanely mismanaged by Krueger. Playing him with garbage fourth liners isn't helping him and the team, especially when he can do well with Eichel.
