52842950 is the Marner OS to watch for

Description
As you all know...people are saying that Marner should make between $9.0 MIL - $11 MIL.

The $10,568,590 is the 4 1sts threshold. I think the Leafs would match anything under that so he would be a Leaf.

As you also all know that any contract that adds up to $52,842,950 or more nets the Leafs 4 1st Round picks. Anything less I am certain the Leafs match.

The trades I did were not serious and not the point of this AGM:
- to move Marleau + a solid prospect to LA as rumoured and create the CAP space and
- the Zaitsev trade is simply a financial wash moving 2 RHD that are not meeting expectations with an EDM UFA winger who they will lose in a year anyway and a TOR RW who has speed to burn and played Junior with McDavid. Hollowell was added as a smooth RHD that is small but has a great hockey IQ. Hate to lose him after watching him on the Marlies this year but with Liljgren and Lindgren as young RHD we can afford to sweeten the pot with him.

Kapanen and Johnsson are signed to the Athletic article contracts that showed what they are worth against the cap %-wise and term.

But in the end we are looking to see if $10,568,590 or $52,842,950 appear on a Marner OS

Marner would also have to accept the offer. And most likely he's not accepting anything under the 4 first round threshold, making this post just meaningless.

As for a realistic limit on what TOR can match on, I think the limit is in the ballpark of $11,5M to $12M. Otherwise it's just not worth it for them, because the rest of the team behind Matthews, Tavares, Marner and Rielly gets so weak it's pretty much impossible to develop further.

With few exceptions, any potential offersheet over the 4 first threshold the Leafs take the picks. Marner knows that, and won't sign an offersheet (people always seem to forget that the player has to sign an offersheet).

I just want to repeat that for everyone else:
There is no credible offersheet threat for Marner

There is however a small (very, very small) chance of Johnsson getting one.

Its not that he would necessarily sign, but if Ferris and his daddy can solicit one, he can certainly use it as leverage in negotiations against the leafs. Its pretty scummy but it could work to up his salary.. it doesn't make sense for the leafs to let him walk at that compensation as bulldog points out.

I don't see an offersheet threat for Marner.... If there is an offersheet threat at all, Kapanen and Johnsson are likely the ones to watch.

A slight overpayment to either of those guys would likely be too rich for the Leafs. I can see a $4 - $4.5 Million offer being thrown at Kap... If anyone actually goes through with an offersheet.... Which is probably a longshot.

Marner not BEING an offer sheet threat but Kapanen and Johnsson having a possibility is something that I completely agree with you on.

It is also why I wonder if Kapanen or Johnsson will be traded before the deadline if more than one team approaches either player between June 26th at 5 pm and July 1st. If there is interest in either then Dubas might be able to be flip them for better assets rather than lost for nothing...well for draft picks. $4,227,438 is the threshold between a 1st and 3rd or just a 2nd. Seems like a HUGE jump in compensation.

It's a huge jump... But if you look at it this way, it doesn't seem ridiculous... There are definitely teams out there who would trade a 1st and a 3rd for either one of those guys. It might not be enough of a deterrent.

And no, I don't see anyone coughing up four 1sts for anyone... Whether it's Marner or Laine or whoever. 1sts are far too valuable.
