reply to this forum with predictions of how many points you think Hughes and Kakko will score in their first NHL season.

Mine:

Jack Hughes: 45 points (16 G, 29 A)
Kappo Kakko: 46 points (26 G, 20 A)

Kakko is definitely more NHL-ready player than Hughes. Hughes will be a stud, but it will take some time. I expect better first season for Kakko... much better season.

Yeah I agree, I feel like Hughes will be getting far less opportunities than Kakko, and it'll take time for him to be trusted by Jersey. I just see Kakko being slotted immediately into New York's top six and taking off right away.

Kinda depends on the team but i'd say:

Kakko - 26G 29A 55P
Hughes - 17G 30A 47P

Yeah I think Kakko will do really well on either team, but Hughes would fit much better in on New York rather than Jersey (at least in the short term).

I think Hughes' success depends a lot on whether or not he centers Taylor Hall's line. If he does, and he plays top PP, he'll be over 55 points, easily. I'm thinking 20G and 40A for 60 points. Kakko is the better goal scorer. He'll be top 3 on the Rangers in goals, probably behind Mika and Kreider. I'm thinking 27G and 25A for 52 points. This is all assuming Hughes goes to the Devils at #1. If the Devils take Kakko, his numbers could be higher if he plays w/ Taylor Hall and Nico on the top line. Either way, it's a great year to be picking top 2 overall.

This would be a great question to revisit after July 1st. What if Panarin ends up w/ NYR?

Keep in mind that Nico had 52 points as a rookie w/ the Devils. Hughes seems to have much higher expectations than Nico. Nico was also young for his draft year. He didn't turn 19 until half way through the season. Hughes is even younger, but he's probably more skilled now than Nico was before the 2017 Draft.

My concern for Hughes though is Nico Hischier. Hischier will probably be taking the time on Hall´s wing, leaving Hughes to the scrap (given Jersey´s poor depth).

I have to think that they'll put Palmieri on Hughes' wing to start out. He's no Hall, but he's good for around 25 goals a season and would be a good complement to Hughes' playmaking abilities, in addition to being a good veteran presence. Splitting up those top 4 forwards by putting two on each line would be a good way to help spread out the offense since they lack a lot of high-end, offensive talent. They could then plug in guys like Noesen, Bratt, or Coleman into those two extra spots to help round out the top six. And that's not including any potential free agent signings.
