Why would Dallas give you a 1st for a 3rd...and why are you giving up so much to take on Lucic?

I also don't think Arizona would want Strome, they traded his brother (who is better than him)...and they have some really good centers, with Hayton coming soon too.

Dallas deal is the condition for the Stars resigning Zuccarello

On the Lucic trade, the 50% retention is a big concession by Edmonton, and Day is not much of a prospect. Still seems a little steep.
Don't really want Kovy but I want Smith less because there are defensemen being blocked by the three overpaid vets.

Its that or 4 years of 6 mil and if we buy him out in a couple years or next year it would be more bearable for both teams. their left side d prospects are weak and day would become their 2nd best with a few years of development under his belt. Names has proven he can play with the best before and he could also slot in as a responsible 3rd liner at all fwd positions. for 2 mill and the ability to let go of the cap space the following year i thought he would have some value to EDM. This was my thought process at least and i know its probably not perfect. Also that was my reason for the Kovi trade. we have a log jam on LD.

Why are they laughable? Even though i was messing around with deals that will almost never happen, i put a lot of thought into the values of the players and the teams needs both ways. If this was so "laughable" that you had to comment on it, the least you could do is explain what you think is off in the value and or adjust what you might think would need to be added/removed.

I gave up a good amount because i figured the 8th overall would be very valuable to them and the Rangers would have to put in a decent offer to get them to give it up. As well as the fact that we dont really need Names with the talent coming up and Day will be expendable with the logjam of LD prospects and already signed players we have.
As for the Strome trade i was looking at it more as the value thing than the destination. Some team will be willing to give up a 3rd to get him.

I'll try my best.

The easiest one to explain is the Kovy deal.

Smith and Kovy have equal value not including salaries. Both played about 60 games last year and came in at -0.6 WAR (it's not that WAR defines everything but it's a nice catch all that avoids me explaining further why they're basically equal players)

Thus, the fact that Smith is 2 mil cheaper makes him significantly more valuable. Kings would be adding here. Tacking on Vesey who fetches roughly a late 2nd/early 3rd on his own swings this really hard.

Looking at it more the 1st trade isn't terrible just pretty unnecessary. The priority here should be to get rid of Staal as opposed to moving up in a pretty poor draft. You'd basically have to do the same thing as Tampa did here. Follow it to the logical conclusion. You'd package that 1st rounder with Staal for let's say a 3rd rounder. So you made extra work for yourself.

Lucic just finished his 2nd straight year -0.4 WAR and what we know about aging curves is that's very improbable to improve and very probable to get worse. He's signed for 4 more years. He's an automatic buyout candidate at 3 mil. The trade makes sense with just a pick swap + Lucic. Lucic at 3 mil probably gets punted for a late rounder to a team wanting grit. Adding Vlad and Day makes zero sense. And again, you're moving up in a bad draft. This trade makes sense for a 1st next year.

Moving up to #8 in this years draft will insure you get an excellent prospect like Zegras, Newhook, or Caufield. Next years draft should be better but you don't know that Edmonton won't have a better year and pick 12-15. And they'll never trade their 1st without some kind of lottery protection.

I would rather pick 15 next year than 8 this year.... I'd rather pick 12 next year than 4 this year. I'm not sure Zegras or Newhook are even top 15 picks among next year's crop....Caufield probably not even a 1st rounder next year...
