Description
Hear me out

-next year will be the toughest cap squeeze so it makes no sense to try and contend. Try and fall back, sell at the deadline and either squeak in or finish in a lottery spot and get a good draft pick.

- Leafs are at an in between phase, Their forwards are ready but dman like Sandin, and Lily are still developing.

- take a year to step back and recoop assets for older players and wait for guys like Sandin, Bracco, Lily and Brooks to develop and ride out the bad contracts... MARLEAU.

- Then in 2020/21 sign a decently big UFA or make a trade and use the newly found cap space and bring a ready Sandin and Lily into the top 4 and go full force in 20/21.

Thank you for that voice of reason with your description. I think it pretty much sums things up, and patience isn't a bad thing.

Don't know about the need for all the trades, though. If Marleau retires (and he might given his decline in play and being aware that he'll likely face the never ending wrath of leaf nation in his last year of his contract if he can't get his play back to where it needs to be) and Brown is traded for a pick then things should work just fine... so long as we can accept that it'll likely be a year of development before making a real push in a couple years

yea like i just dont see how this team is 'better' next year. Unless Sandin and Bracco come in and are insane, so maybe you pull a st louis 2017. Still try for the playoffs but dont do it at the risk of the future.

that seems to be the wisest approach to me. I think it'd be foolish to blow up the offense to try and shore up the defense right now. Give it time. The offense is young and talented - keep them. The defense is a patch work with good prospects coming. Be patient. Accept that next year could be a step back and then build the team through that process of drafting -> developing (marlies) -> growing team success.

If the we/the leafs can accept that process then I think we're in good shape. Getting all emotional and making panic moves will likely hurt more in the long run
