Parayko and Bouwmeester have been one of the best shutdown pairings in the NHL.
I think maintaining the Defensive Core was a smart move you can also give guys like Walman, Reinke, and Mikkola another year to grow. Gives them more space, and also the fact the cap space is even helpful for our cap situation. The cap grows to 83M so basically we can get Edmundson Binnington, and a few other guys locked up long-term so we won't have to deal with it.

It's a good signing. He's been really good the last month. Still makes the occasional boneheaded play, but has earned another year at only 3.25. Similar to Chara.
Speaking of Edmundson, I think it is possible they even move him although I don't want that to happen.
You are looking at possession metrics not defense. Those are 2 completely different stats. Possession Metrics does not have anything to do with Offense. He isn't great on offense, but he is one hell of a defender which is what I said.

Giving up less shots than how many you're generating is a very important part of being a "shutdown" defenseman. (See Mark Giordano, Brian Dumoulin, Hampus Lindholm, etc.)
Anyway, for one year, it's not the end of the world, but still, he's sub-replacement level at three times the price.

There are other factors that go into being a shutdown defender. Shattenkirk had great corsi numbers in St. Louis, but no one would mistake him for a shutdown defender. Also keep in mind, defenseman who shoot a lot of pucks will also tend to have a higher corsi because they do shoot the puck a lot. I'll take Parayko and Bouwmeester over Shattenkirk any day.
