Fair deal, both teams are losers. Confused
-Bos because they got a Playoff noshow who only bothers to show up for 1/3rd of the regular season games.
-MN because added a boom or bust prospect to their deepest position of team depth, and traded away a player from their position of the most need.

As a Habs fan, I wanted Coyle so much. I see now Lehkonen or Evans would'nt have been enough. Poehling would have been too much.

Now that there's a fire sell in MIN, can we at least get Brodin?

Big win for BOS here, imo. Donato was not gonna help BOS THIS year. If they want to make a realistic run in the playoffs this will def. benefit them in the short term. This trade may have set the stage for another BOS trade for Stone or Panarin.

I like this deal for Boston. They get a third-line center that's under contract for another season after this. Given that Coyle isn't just a rental, I figured Minnesota could've gotten more for him. Donato obviously hasn't lived up to his 12 game show from last season, and he's already 22; he could be a late bloomer, but you generally don't see players grow or progress too much when they're already at that age, i.e. Jimmy Vesey, Drake Caggiula.

Good for Boston for dealing from a position of strength and acquiring a 3C for the next season and a half; good for Minnesota for acquiring a younger player with decent upside, but I'd give the edge to Boston.

Boston trading from a position of strength to fill a big need. Pretty much every armchair gm had Donato being traded, nobody really viewed him as a big part of Boston's future anyway.

Not a bad trade for Minnesota by any margin, (save maybe they couldve got more for Coyle at the draft?) But edge Boston.

I like this for Boston. But for Minny, I'm just asking; Why? Makes no sense for them imo. Big gamble on Donato and they don't really need the extra cap space.

I think Coyle is the better player in the deal so I think Boston comes out on top.

There are some strong opinions either way expressed in this thread.

Those favouring Boston recognize Coyle is a versatile 40+ pt winger (who can play up the middle if needed) signed for not just this year but next at a reasonable cap hit.

Those favouring Minnesota see Donato’s long term potential where he could at least match, and likely exceed, Coyle’s production. They also note Donato is under team control for 3 more years than Coyle, important in the Cap era.

Your perspective on the trade is contingent on 2 things:

1) Likelihood of Donato reaching his ceiling and exceeding Coyle’s production (and how long it will take to get there)

2) Likelihood of Bruins getting to Eastern Conference Finals this season or next, with powerhouses Toronto and Tampa Bay to go through.

If the Bruins reach the Conference Finals with Coyle in either year, this trade is a Boston Win. If Donato becomes a legit 60-70 point winger, well, then it’s a big Minnesota win. If neither or both happen? Well, it’s a pretty even split. The 5th was likely just the lube to get Minnesota to sign off on the deal, realistically speaking.

Couple interesting tidbits.

Coyle lived in Boston and attended Boston Univ before leaving in his sophomore year to play Junior hockey in the CHL.

Perhaps Minnesota is trying to rekindle the chemistry that Donato shared with Jordan Greenway - they both played together for Team USA on the 2018 Olympic squad a year ago.

Boston Traded:

5th round pick (Likely nothing)
Ryan Donato (Lit up the ECAC and showed real promise in those 12 games in 17-18, but has since never really showed that potential again)

For

Charlie Coyle (40-50 PT Center that can slot anywhere in the lineup. With 2 playoff runs left on his contract.)

I really think this is a homerun for the Bruins. Despite my obvious bias against Boston, this is one of those underrated moves that could potential make them one of those teams that seriously challenge for the cup.)

I don't agree. Donato's value is at an all time low. He hasn't lived up to any expectations.

How is he worth more? He has no established NHL track record and struggled to stick on a Bruins team that is desperate for secondary scoring....and Donato is a pure sniper.

If I offered you a $100 winning scratch ticket or a unscratched ticket that could be worth $100, which would you consider to be worth more?

Except Donato wasn't a top pick and hasn't achieved anything as a Pro. Pulji has accomplished more at 20 and was a top 5 pick. They aren't comparable
