Talbot Stone and Staal

Description
Myers starts on the 3rd pair and hopefully pushes up into the top 4. Zaitsev is a good defensive defender and with the retained cap his deal isn't bad.

Talbot backing up Hart is a strong tandem who should be able to provide health stability in goal we haven't seen in a few seasons.
Stone is the major free agent add and is frankly incredible. Staal gives great centre depth, basically making the 2nd and 3rd lines interchangeable.

why pay a backup goalie 3 million a year. That's nuts.

Stability. The thing the Flyers haven't had in years. Talbot is a healthy guy, hes a reasonable goalie. Hart can't be making 60+ starts. What if he has a softmore slump or gets hurt? Talbot can be relied upon to pick up the slack. Paying less that $4m for 2 goalies is laughably cheap. We need to learn to not cut corners in net again!

Edit: The only team spending less than $4m on goalies who don't have a big earner on LITR is Buffalo.

Talbot is also a mentor to Carter Hart. Could help out a lot.

That contract sucks as well, especially on a 3 year deal. For a guy who will be 32, and frankly not that good. He's one of the issues in Edmonton which is why they are looking to trade him. If he was good there would be no way they would.

Because Talbot is Hart's mentor. Now the term may be 1 year too long but $3 mil means nothing with the cap room we have.

No, they are looking to trade him to clear cap so they can bring Sekera off IR...

Exactly, we're basically making a 3rd round pick for a guy we should be targeting in free agency anyway and if it doesn't work out before July 1st you made a 3rd round pick.

Also the stuff about Talbot being bad really just looks at the surface numbers. He's obviously having a down year but the Oilers give up way more high danger chances than we do in similar total shots against. Put Talbot behind our defence (which would also hopefully be better next season too) and he should grade out just fine. It probably should just be a 2 year deal though, I guess that's the ideal scenario on reflection.

$3 mil for that long is way too much for Talbot at this point in his career. You want him to mentor Hart then pay him $6 to be a goalie coach and get him off the cap.

I'm fine with $1.5 to maybe even $2 million for him for a year or two but no more than that. Also I like seeing Stolarz get time too, he has shown he belongs in the NHL. If they are going to just send him back down to the minors then you should just trade him at this point.

It all depends what the UFA market is offering Talbot. If the Flyers have to go to $3 million, I would want that contract to end after 2 years so he's off the books when it's time to give Hart a raise.

this is exactly my point. Why over pay this bum? Especially on that term. They act like anyone else is chasing him down to come play.
You can probably get him for league minimum at this point.
