8 players averaged over .5 PPG. Their depth was unreal. Their ability to roll all 4 lines is what won them the cup. Mix that in with Matt Murray and you will win a Stanley Cup.

How is this unreal depth??

Ian Cole
Trevor Daley
Brian Dumoulin
Ron Hainsey
Olli Maatta
Chad Ruhwedel
Justin Schultz
Mark Streit

If the Maple Leafs signed him last season they would've paid less. But because Dubas decided to wait, he essentially had no leverage. If you got a young talent, that is remotely considered generational you sign him the moment you can. Because he will only get better. Imagine if he waited till free agency. There definitely would have been offer sheets for Matthews.

Got me there lol. Still doesn't change the fact that they could roll 4 lines and play elite with all 4. That's the difference

Still leaves about 3 Million to resign those 3 forwards + you are down a top 4 defensemen from this year. There is no way to argue that the Leafs could possibly be better next year than this year.

Open an ACGM, I think your numbers are off.
Hyman(2.5)-JT(11)-Marner(?)
Marleau(6.25)-Matthews(11.634)-Willy(6.962)
Johnsson(2.25)-Kadri(4.5)-Kappy(2.75) <----- I am using Bob Mackenzie's numbers here
Marlie(?)-Goat(0.675)-Moore(0.775)

Muzz(4)-Mo(5)
Mitts(0.863)-Z(4.5)
Rosen(0.75)-Holl(0.675)*

Andersen (5)
Sparks (0.75) <-- bobs # again

Total = 70.834 cap hit

Team needs:
Mitch (10 by bobs numbers)
4LW (0.925 if Engvall, less if marchment or UFA)
2 Spares (Marlies are in TOR so they can easily go with 22, or even 21 players if needed) (~1.5 total)

comes to: 83.259
That means we need to find 260k, be it through cheaper extras or a small cap rise to 83.5.
Maybe Mitch takes a tiny discount when he sees this, or the Leafs take off a year to do it. who knows.

*Holl will be replaced by liljegren if/when he gets a shot

Rosen is having a hell of a year, as has lily when not injured.
Mitts is ready for the top 4 lol. Babs already gives him top 4 5v5 mins.

So they will be about the same roster + development - Gards = ~ the same or better

Your're missing Brown (unless youre anticipating a trade). They can get LTIR relief from Horton too. I think Leafs need to do whatever it takes to move Zaitsev and possibly move Brown.

they did get 1 ufa year, but I agree. AAV is fine, term is not good. if it was 7@11.634, it would be a good deal (hell even 6@), but 5 is no bueno.

You better update your giant wall of nonsense to reflect these new developments.

Remember when you said I was pulling numbers out my ass when I said the contact will be way higher than your projected 9 million for Matthews?

Hello.

You don't lose valuable assets like that for nothing. If you want to stay contending, you either resign those guys or trade them at TD for assets with control.

Teams don't trade assets with controllable years for players on expiring deals who can walk as a UFA. He is going to walk and sign at the age of 27 just like Tavares to an American team. Have fun Toronto while you have him!

Not great. I'd sign him a little cheaper for more term but he wants a shorter contract so that's fine.

Hello.

I was trying to find this. I remember seeing someone trying to convince other people that Matthews would take a discount and sign for 9 Million.

Link the post if you can find it lol

What does this mean for Marner? I doubt he accepts less than $10M now - he's the guy driving the offense on that team.

If Marner doesn't get what he wants before July 1st I can bet you a offer sheet is coming his way.

You sure he'll be a UFA? He'll be 26. @Banks @Jarvis

You're a UFA at age 27 OR after 7 NHL seasons.

So ya he'll be a UFA.

Any signing is a good signing with regards to Matthews imo. The guy was gonna get offer sheeted after July 1st, I don’t think anyone doubts that. If leafs would of played hardball or try and wait it out, the price would of gone up higher and higher. So Leafs should just be happy they got Matthews at market value for 5 years.

On the other hand. Cap hell will be a legit concern for the foreseeable future. Better win within the next 3-4 years, once Andersen and Reilly need new deals, no way leafs will be able to ice as good a team as they will have for the next few years.

I'm just glad Leafs are not paying their elite goaltender $10.5M for the next 8 seasons

Now who’s trolling....

Wanna make a bet that Andersen will get a bigger cap hit in 3 years until he’s 40?

And you're missing the point that no team would over pay for Kapanen to attempt to make a team go into cap hell. If Leafs decide to take the compensation, some team is now overpaying Kapanen and sending Leafs a pick

4M for Kapanen isnt overpaying in my mind...for a 2nd rounder...why not???

A player becomes UFA at age 27 OR 7 years in NHL. Therefore when this contract expires, Matthews will be in the league for 8 years . So 1 UFA year will be burned.

Hence the No Movement Clause (NMC) on his final year! This was all Matthews and 0% TML long term value.

Great deal for Auston Matthews! 5 years at top dollar and front loaded and after 5 seasons he gets to call the shots. Can't do any better then that. As for for Leafs organization it is actually good because it makes them have to think correctly going forward with other players and NOT sign stupid 8 year contracts. This Deal to me makes the GM and his staff and ownership have to do their jobs in ALL areas better. Organizations need to really start working their player polls more efficiently so that they can fit more talent into the Salary Cap they are allotted by the NHL. This isn't just pay the longest term and highest price and get results. This days were stupid and are disappearing. Matthews and his agent are smart because they are playing the calculated odds that the Cap will continue to rise and Auston will be producing big time. Thus garnering him another big contract in Toronto and him are both healthy and playing well. Congratulations Auston on being from Arizona in the USA and signing the biggest contract in Maple Leafs history!

I would say Tavares is...or Marner...but if you value C over a winger, I would say Tavares

I am not a TML fan but this is my humble opinion in seeing those players play a few times that Ive watched...
