Pens pay to add term and upside with bjugstad. Brassman was never a good fit and pens are happy to move on. At this point, he was a sunk cost.

If bjugstad can stay healthy then this is an easy win for the pens as he can fill the 3C void since bonino left for years to come.

Well you can count out any Schenn to Pittsburgh deals. I feel Florida got screwed out of Bjugstad.

Not a bad move... but just a move. Expected more from Rutherford's trade history. Some retention on Bjugstad for all of those picks would have been in order. I wonder what Florida will get for Brassard and Sheahan when they flip them as rentals.

I think that Bjugstad is slightly over rated. People look at his size and confuse that for being better than he is.

Florida will end up winning in the long term. They will trade Brassard and Sheahan for picks or another player. But to give up on Bjugstad is kind of odd to me. He could slide up and be the 2C there and put Malkin on the wing, McCann is a center too. Or like Ogg said, he will be the 3C.

I feel like Pittsburgh wins out here. Bjugstad's main problem is health (much like Schwartz) so his value is much lower than it should. McCann is a solid young, fast player as well which is something Pittsburgh desperately needed. 2 fourths and a 2nd doesn't really make up for that.

Still long term for short term not a great trade for florida at all.

Really, i think it looks like a good trade. PIT gets Bjugstad, who i believe is younger, and McCann has potential. Florida gets cap space for next year and picks. And if Brassard and/or Sheahan play well there, maybe they could re-sign them. If not, they might trade them at the deadline. But i'd have to think about it more.

For this year the Panthers probably slightly upgrade Bjudstad and McCann. Both are younger than Brassard and Sheahan and have more term. This would make more sense if the Panthers weren’t 11 points out of the playoffs. If one or both of Brassard/Sheahan walk and the Cats don’t even make the playoffs this could end up being REAL bad.

Edit: I just saw the picks involved. Much more even deal but I’d still give the edge to the Pens.

Outside of cap space and what could be a good 2nd rounder, Florida doesn't really get much.

Very interesting trade. FLR is rebuilding. They'll flip Brass and Sheahan for whatever they can get. More picks for them is a good thing. PIT wins in the sense that they're admitting the Brass trade was terrible and they're shedding him. PIT also wins if Bjugstad can both stay healthy and perform better than Brass did as the #3C. With that said...PIT now has 2 of the 3 most injured players in the NHL...Hanzal, Letang and Bjustad. That's somewhat of a joke, but kinda not. It's a big risk for PIT because they got another $4M cap hit with term and he really does get injured a lot. Overall considering where each team is...playoffs vs rebuild...I think it's a win for both team which is my vote. I give the slit nod to FLR because they'll get more picks with the flips and will get cap space next year for moves. Gives them more flexibility.

If it's true about FLA wanting Panatin and Bob, and they get them July 1st, it's a win for them.

If they can't and don't improve, it's an ouch

Fair deal. Pittsburgh improves. Florida will probably flip these players for some more draft picks. And they clear cap space to make some moves this offseason (Panarin maybe).

How is it that Pittsburgh wins every trade. Every year they absolutely rob someone.

They got two slightly under performing, but good recent 1st rounders for an expiring contract of a guy who isn't that good and a 4th liner.

WTAF?

I feel it is hard to fully judge the merits of this trade in isolation given the near certainty that Brassard and Sheehan are going to be flipped in the coming weeks (or days, if not sooner). If they’re able to get a few more assets then the trade doesn’t look quite as bad. But yeah, at first blush it’s a win for Pittsburgh.

I agree, but McCann is performing better than Brassard. Bjugstad is having a bad year, but is a fairly proven 35+ point player. Pitt got the two younger more talented players for 2 rentals that are not very good. Brassard will likely be flipped, but for what? a low 2nd at best.

McCann adds some nice youth with some skill, although he's injury prone Nick Bjugstad seems to be fairly reliable but having a bad year. Brassard may be traded as well as Sheahan for picks. I'd give the edge to Pittsburgh.

All in all it looks like FLA may get the leg up on this one in terms of overall value should they flip both of the players they got by the trade deadline. In terms of immediate impact I think PIT got what they wanted and may be a more well rounded team heading into the playoffs. If FLA can turn Brassard and Sheahan into a few more draft choices with a 1st in the mix I'll. have to give them the edge. If Bjustad can turn it on in PIT then they may get the edge.

At this point FLA gets the best overall player in Brassard as Bjustad has yet to top 50 points whereas Brassard has done that twice. PIT gets younger with more cost certainty and FLA can add more at the deadline. If this is a move to get Panarin out of CBJ then watch out. I've read Panarin want to be close to the ocean and what better place than FLA. Not to mention that Brassard is an original CBJ draft choice and played there for 5 years....
