Description
There has been a lot of debate on Isles Twitter regarding whether Lou should add at the trade deadline and how aggressive he should be.

In my mind this team can compete for a title. Call me crazy I don't care. Hockey is the one major sport where anything can happen. Look at Vegas. The Isles are playing structured hockey with a chip on their shoulders. That's dangerous.

Secondly, I don't buy the argument that a trade or two will disrupt team chemistry. Winning builds chemistry and solves all. Adding talent where you can to fortify your team should always be a priority if the value makes sense. The Isles need to improve their 3rd line scoring efficiency and these two trades help significantly.

Kings trade: LA continues their tear down under Rob Blake. The Isles could use some scoring help on the 3rd line and Toffoli fits the bill. He will likely also replace Clutterbuck as the right handed shot on PP2. The Kings receive a young, cost controlled forward with legit NHL experience. I don't think Ho-Sang's value is that far in the gutter. Even though he wasn't racking up points after his call up it was evident he worked on neutral zone turnovers (his biggest weakness) and was very effective in his own end defending. Definitely becoming a complete player, but the Isles forfeit waiting another season or two in lieu of an immediate impact in Toffoli.

Devils trade: Johansson probably doesn't have a future in NJ after this season. And with the team being far from playoff contention it makes sense they sell off their rentals. MoJo played well under Barry Trotz during his time in Washington and would help improve the scoring dilemma on our third line. He shouldn't cost too much given his expiring contract and limited production of late due to injury. Pelech has another 2 years of control at a reasonable $1.6M cap hit. He is a definite improvement over Yakovlev and Lovejoy on the 3rd pair. With Andy Greene's age I wouldn't be surprised to see Pelech on the 2nd pair by next season.

Like you thought of the Isles going for it without give much up. The fans deserve it.

Thanks man. I believe there should be a balance between doing nothing and going all in. No need to be reckless. Unless there was an offer we couldn't refuse (ex: Tarasenko or something) the Isles can still add some strategic pieces without giving up the farm. They can chase a big FA fish and only concede cash. I think Isles fans would be pleased with this kind of deadline. Give the team some reinforcements and hope for a deep playoff run

That's a reasonable return for Toffoli. Not sure if the Kings would be willing to take the risk on Ho-Sang. Intriguing offer though.

What's Ho-Sang's value right now? I dont think hes the trade piece people are thinking. He's 23 and I would agree he has value, but it's not close to his 1st round #28 from.......2014. Just JHS alone, I'm guessing LATE 2nd early-mid 3rd.

You're welcome. You're right about chasing a UFA and it's only cost cash. That's generally how teams improve, not by making lateral trades. Unfortunately when a team is poor, they often have to overpay to get a UFA, which leads to long term cap and value problems (see Ladd). But be a good team in a place where players will like to play (like Long Island), then you can attract UFAs..and maybe even at a discount. It would be great step for the Isles to make the playoffs....for the players, fans and also players who just might want to play for the Isles in the future. For instance the college upcoming UFA Dman Fox might be looking at the Rangers as his team of choice, but a good Isle team just might be his second choice, and real possibility to sign as an Isle.

I think he's worth about a 2nd. You're certainly in the ballpark. But I would also argue Ho-Sang is a "guarantee" so to speak as opposed to the crap shoot of the second/third round of a draft. I really think you can safely predict about 15 prospects in an average draft.

Also - not to slight Toffoli too much (because I think he can help many teams) but his value is pretty low at the moment. Not a ton of production this season but that can be attributed to LAK as a whole. All that being said I think the value is pretty fair. Whether you want to look at it as "two" 2nd rounders or a decent prospect with some sample size and a 2nd.

I like it a lot. If we can resign him, that’d solve our problem with center depth too, because if I’m not mistaken, Johansson played Center pretty well for the Caps and Devils.

I will say this: getting these guys will make pursuing that coveted UFA big fish will be difficult if we hang on to Johansson and Toffoli. Barzal’s contract is looming in the future. Adding a Panarin/Stone/Duchene UFA would require sacrificing a 1st or more to move Boychuk/Ladd/Clutterbuck. But if Lou can find a way to make it work, go for it.

I've been having this debate with someone on another Kings thread, but I feel like LA will get someone to give them the moon for Toffoli. His career numbers are awesome and the entire Kings team is playing poorly, it's just a bad situation for them this season. If that's the return for him, DONE! Sign me up now. Johansson is another given I feel like. He played well with Trotz. He does have a concussion history. If he gets hurt again, plug MDC back into the spot and go.

I'm not sure if it's worth getting both players though. Trotz won't take Komarov out of the lineup and I don't see them taking Filppula out right now either. That leaves room for one them. The other thing is that Toffoli becomes another player they have to extend next season (assuming his play go back to the level it was, which it absolutely will).

Either way, they're definitely good trades!

These are some decent, reasonable trades. I don't think it would be enough for Taffoli. I think for Taffoli, the Kings would require a 1st and Ho-Sang or the 2nd and Bellows. I'd be ok with upping the cost a bit.

Sometimes it's difficult to evaluate a player unless you spend a lot of time looking at the in-depth scoresheet carefully. While Hagelin was injured, Desjardinns used Toffoli a lot of time on the penalty kill, which speaks to a developing part of his game.
